Research Assistant - Zebrafish - Biology

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant to join the Biology Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
 
Under close supervision, is responsible for the care and maintenance of the Institution's zebrafish (Danio rerio) research facility. Also provides assistance with experimental work and sample analysis involving zebrafish. Excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently, effectively, and productively are required. The successful candidate needs to work as part of a team and be able to coordinate effectively with the zebrafish facility users. This is a Woods Hole, land based position.
 
The internal working title for this position will be Research Assistant I/II.  The final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education & experience. 


Essential Functions

 
 Perform all necessary tasks to keep the fish in good health. Including, but not limited to.
 
  • General zebrafish husbandry and maintenance.
  • Maintenance and breeding of various mutant and transgenic fish lines.
  • Genotyping of mutant lines.
  • Overseeing the operation and upkeep of the facility.
  • Raising live feed (artemia).
  • Maintaining water quality.
  • Detailed record keeping.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours to accommodate facility needs.
  • Provides assistance with laboratory safety programs.
  • Opportunities for involvement in related research involving cell culture, molecular biology assays.  
 
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • As deemed necessary by supervisor


Education & Experience

 
Bachelor's degree, or Associate's degree in related field plus one year related experience, or High School diploma or equivalent plus three year's related experience.  
Experience in fish culture/or molecular assays (DNA isolation; polymerase chain reaction (PCR)) a plus.

Physical Requirements


Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift 25-50 pounds; carry 10-25 lbs. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively. Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, reaching above and below the shoulders, climbing ladders/stools, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping. Other occupational requirements include talking, working around others, and with others and working alone. Will be exposed to dust or other irritants, hazardous substances or specimens and odorous chemicals or specimens. Physical duties are subject to change.
