2022-2023: Earth Scientist Intern

Earth Scientists within Chevron are part of multi-disciplinary teams which vary in make-up but can include petroleum engineers, facility engineers, drilling and completion engineers, and operations personnel.  Earth Scientists develop technical skills in geoscience, geophysics, and petrophysics assignments focused on exploration, development, reservoir characterization, and well operations.  In addition, Chevron has opportunities building lower carbon capabilities in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), geothermal, and hydrogen. 

For recent graduates, Chevron has a competency-based employee development program that includes two to three technical assignments in the first 5 years of your career supported by comprehensive technical training and mentoring combined with on-the-job experience.  Mobility is encouraged as there are many opportunities for Chevron Earth Scientists to work in a variety of assignments at different locations, both domestic and international. 

Earth Science interns will be assigned a position and project that will contribute value to Chevron based on degree, relevant academic preparation, previous work experience, and career objectives. Interns will be provided guidance by a supervisor and a technical mentor.

Geoscientists are responsible for characterization of subsurface opportunities, the asset base, development of asset plans, forecasting and delivering Resources to Reserves to Production to Returns. They support regional evaluations, prospect generation and maturation, appraisal studies, and exploration well operations. Geoscientists also produce integrated reservoir characterization captured in a range of reservoir maps and models, are responsible for well planning and monitoring during drilling and completion operations and participate in planning and execution of well data acquisition programs. Chevron geoscientists also work with subject matter experts to facilitate technical studies.

Geophysicists perform detailed seismic subsurface assessments and use geophysical attribute analysis and visualization techniques to enhance reservoir characterization. Geophysicists must keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, maintain close ties with geophysical vendors and intra-company technology networks and leverage technology when appropriate.

Petrophysicists are responsible for open hole and/or cased hole evaluation, integration of core, mudlog and cuttings analysis, selection of logging tools, and design of data acquisition programs.
Operations Geoscientists are responsible for pre-drill modeling and development of the well plan. They support and direct the drilling process by identifying rock formations and determining how drilling should proceed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Students pursuing the requirements for their Master’s or Doctorate Thesis program in geology, geophysics, geological engineering, or related fields, with less than 2 years of directly related work experience.
  • Strong academic performance in core programs, communication, leadership, teamwork.
  • Problem-solving skills, analytics, and exposure to coding & data science concepts.
  • Position may require driving on a routine basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with industry workflows for subsurface characterization.
  • Participation in an energy industry or sponsored university research project. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in a technical area aligned with Chevron’s business needs.
  • Practical experience with geoscience coding, data science, and/or machine learning.
