Student Engagement and Outreach Librarian
Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn State Scranton               
The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seeks applications and nominations for the position of Student Engagement and Outreach Librarian, Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn State Scranton. This is a non tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Head Librarian, Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn State Scranton. We seek a proactive, enthusiastic, and creative individual to engage and collaborate with faculty, staff, and students around current and emerging technologies for learning and research. Duties of this position include providing an introduction to the services and resources in both the physical and online library spaces for our students; using exhibitions, public programming, social networking, and other innovative techniques to engage the student community; identifying and promoting the use of emerging technologies throughout the campus community; and collaborating with campus partners on outreach to the community. Other duties include reference services (both virtual and in-person) and library instruction. Some evening and/or weekend work may be required. The librarian will be located primarily on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus, supporting all programs, but will also provide liaison services for select departments (Business, Corporate Communications, Project and Supply Chain Management, Information Sciences and Technology, and Mechanical Engineering) at the Penn State Scranton campus. Responsibilities

  • Introducing the services and resources in both the physical and online library spaces for our faculty, staff, and students.
  • Providing instruction to students in various years and programs on campus.
  • Using exhibitions, programming, social networking, and other innovative techniques to engage the student community.
  • Identifying and promoting the use of emerging technologies throughout the campus community.
  • Collaborating with campus partners to grow the Libraries presence on campus.
  • Establish a culture of outreach to the community that involves partnerships and programming.
Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library and information sciences from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent).
  • Experience related to information literacy instruction, reference, and research support.
  • Strong knowledge of print and digital information resources.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a student-centered teaching philosophy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Commitment to service at local, regional, or national professional organizations and enriching professional expertise by attending conferences and continuing education opportunities.
Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of post-MLS experience with relevant reference and instruction experience at an academic or research library.
  • Demonstrated experience with current technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience creating successful community partnerships and outreach experiences.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre is one of more than 20 Penn State campuses state-wide. It is a student-centered campus of approximately 400 students; about 20% are adult learners. The coursework for the first two years of more than 160 Penn State baccalaureate majors is offered, as well as 9 baccalaureate degrees and four associate degrees. Penn State Scranton is a student-centered campus of approximately 1,000 students. The campus offers 13 baccalaureate degrees and 4 associate degrees as well as the coursework for the first two years of more than 160 Penn State baccalaureate majors. Students and faculty at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn State Scranton have all of the resources of a major research university at their disposal, but in a small college atmosphere. Class sizes are small and the student/faculty ratio is low, so students can receive much individual attention. Salary is commensurate with a candidate’s qualifications, education, and experience.
