Use your Radiological Control Technician (RCT) skills or your nuclear degree to do something truly remarkable. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a junior-level, skilled Radiological Control Technician to join the Radiation Protection Division. Our RCTs support a wide variety of different work activities across a broad range of facilities. They have the opportunity to learn new skills, as well as, enhance their knowledge of and expertise in the identification and understanding of radiological hazards and radiological hazard controls. Our team members implement a variety of radiation protection related requirements; work independently on challenging projects requiring close collaboration with multiple work groups. Assignments can involve activities both inside and outside in varying work environments and weather conditions. As a RCT 2, you will provide direct support to the field implementation of the radiological control program through the execution of workplace surveys and the analysis, interpretation, and documenting of radiological data. Perform workplace surveillance of radiological conditions by conducting surveys for removable and fixed contamination and external radiation surveys for beta/gamma and neutron radiation; assist with routine and non-routine radiation protection activities to ensure the implementation of and compliance with procedures, including response to abnormal events; and assist with air sampling and operation of air monitoring equipment.

Knowledge and/or experience with radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, dosimetry, calibration of instrumentation and other radiation protection activities.

Ability to communicate effectively and implement radiological controls for individuals performing radiological work. Verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively communicate and enforce radiological standards to workers and management across the site.

Knowledge and/or experience with radioactive contamination detection and associated protection principles as it pertains to the measurement and control of removable and fixed contamination.

Experience, specialized training, and/or knowledge of working in a radiological or nuclear facility, including a demonstrated commitment to safety and security. Ability to assist senior RCT’s in controlling moderate and high hazard radiological work.

Position requires a high school diploma and 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job.

An Associate degree in a Radiation Control/Protection field is desired.

Above-average math skills, including ability to perform simple calculations.

Performs semi-skilled computer functions (e.g., Word, Excel, e-mail).

Certification of passing the DOE RCT standardized CORE Exam and active HAZWOPER 40 Hr.

Must be able to lift up to 30+ pounds and stand for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Must be able to use stairways, fixed ladders, and ladders up to six feet. Must be physically able to work in demanding environments.

Work involves moderate physical demands, such as lifting and carrying radiation protection instruments and wearing personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection. Work may be outdoors and may be scheduled at times other than regular work hours.
