Major Component Replacement & Crane Specialist - (Travel up to 80% from home location)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This position is for the Operator II, level on the EDPR Heavy Assembly Lift Operations team (HALO). This position is for a person with the right skills to be trained in operating a self-hoisting crane and have the ability and experience to replace major components of a wind turbine. The position requires a comprehensive understanding and ability to apply your experience and education in all elements required for the successful large corrective crane operations. This includes, but is not limited to, completing Lock out Tag out (LOTO), Tail Board meetings, and job specific documentation that is required to conduct corrective maintenance in the safest manner possible. Perform inspections of equipment, tools, vehicles and rigging for compliance with EDPR policy and Governmental Safety and Environmental regulations. This person must be a self-motivated, self-starter and with a strong ability to recognize opportunities, take actions to achieve results, model and drive collaboration.
The HALO Operator 2 member will support the Lead Operator with ensuring team and equipment readiness to perform the day’s work. Your time will be spent supporting the ground and up tower functions from arranging the ground works, operating the crane, hoisting tools and parts up and down along with exchanging large turbine components. You will lead regional support technicians in the field with ground and up-tower works. Daily works will be centered around doing what it takes to safely replace major components and crane operations. Stop work times are usually at breaking/transition/milestone points and can vary from day to day depending on safety and progress. 

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Support the HALO project manager with development of Standard Operating Procedures for heavy lift and self-hoisting crane to include, but not limited to: general crane works, transportation methods, component use inspection, field preparation plans and so on, in-line with Corporate Policies and Best-Known Practices;
  • As requested by or in the absence of the Lead Operator: Supervise HALO team and project supplied workers;
  • Support the planning and coordination for all required maintenance of crane system and components in compliance with OEM warranty;
  • Perform major corrective replacements and repairs (gearbox, generator, rotor, main-shaft, blade) with self-hoisting crane. Confirm up tower components match workorder components and scope;
  • Train and instruct other technicians to perform crane and component replacement works;
  • Perform heavy rigging operations for component replacements;
  • Ensure the crane schedule is accurate and up to date and work with the Project Manager to make any changes
  • Support troubleshooting for any turbine faults and/or Crane faults during the exchange process;
  • Support the Lead Operator in coordinating with the site manager(s): any site-specific requirements, point of contact, sign in, site logistics policy, muster points, site evacuation plan, area services and so on to ensure all safety, reporting, local municipal and regulatory requirements are met;
  • Support with the establishment of the site communication plan and group. Communicate with the windfarm manager and HALO manager daily, prepare Plan Of the Day (POD) with, at minimum, text message updates on end of day (EOD) status;
  • Manage self-hoisting crane components to ensure longevity and ready to use condition always;
  • Provide the HALO Lead and windfarm manager any punch list items to ensure proper follow up of any pending issues following exchange works;
  • Ensure that onsite work creates minimum impact to surrounding environment. Minimize the work extending beyond existing roads and tower pads;
  • As needed, confirm and communicate with the Central Maintenance team for component deliveries and preparedness;
  • Complete necessary forms and reports regarding maintenance work as requested by the Company, including SAP entries and other;
  • Oversee effective consumable and necessary crane & turbine parts inventory management to include initiation or continuance of inventory stock and issuance system for spare parts and defective parts control and communication. This includes necessary “support” parts to complete component exchanges and crane equipment; 
  • Ensure that scheduled field work for the WTG is in the best interest of the Turbine condition and Energy Based Availability;
  • Protect Company confidential information by not communicating, disclosing, or using for benefit of third parties and maintain the highest degree of honesty and integrity always;
  • Operate Semi-Truck & Trailer, comply with all DOT requirements and all state & local requirements/restrictions;
  • Support the planning and coordination for all required maintenance and cleaning of:
  • Crane system and components
  • Semi-tractor and trailers
  • And, perform such other duties as may be required from time to time by the company.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EDUCATION

  • Education and/or Experience: Minimum education requirement is Associates Degree and at least (8) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in operations and major wind turbine component replacement.
  • Basic Electricity Experience: Understanding of Ohms Law, the difference and use of AC and DC currents, circuit testing with multi-meter and its fundamentals.
  • Medium Voltage: Understanding switch gear, pad mount transformer, step-down transformer termination and basic safety.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Interpersonal Skills: The ability to lead a team, set achievable goals, monitor performance, coach, resolve differences, identify strengths and weaknesses to better train and manage the team.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts, to include fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Capacity / Proactivity to perform lifting riggings and implementations in main components in order to simplify or facilitate hoisting operation with Self-hoisting device through maneuvers as simplified and safe as possible.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Creativity: Ability to imagine the process to anticipate. The ability to see around corners, find new alternatives and options to increase safety and work efficiency.
 
COMPUTER SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of database, project management, spreadsheet and word processing software, electronic mail, graphics, technical diagrams, flow charts, etc.
  • Understanding of Microsoft products and/or complementing products preferred.
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise preferred

  •  Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to frequently perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching approximately 75% of the time while on wind farm sites; ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment.
  •  Walking:  Ability to walk .25 to .5 miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on wind farm sites.
  •  Speech/Reading:  Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
  •  Lifting: Ability to frequently lift items weighing up to 60 pounds and to occasionally lift items weighing between 60 and 100 pounds.
  •  Climbing:  Ability to climb turbine towers up to 95 meters in height approximately 5-10 times per week, or as needed. Weight, including harness and tools, must be in accordance with the weight limit as specified by the ANSI Fall Protection Standards.
  •  Vision/Hearing: Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
  •  Tolerance to Extreme Weather Conditions: Ability to work in adverse weather conditions 35% of the time while on wind farm sites.
