The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to deliver to the world timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence to improve health policy and practice. IHME carries out its mission through a range of projects within different research areas including the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors; Future Health Scenarios; Cost Effectiveness and Efficiency; Resource Tracking; and Impact Evaluations. The Global Impact Group (GIG) leads IHME’s pursuit to improve health policy and practice through cutting edge communication and collaboration. GIG runs campaigns to build awareness of the most critical health challenges, and work with decision-makers to take informed action.

IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Manager of Campaigns to join the Global Impact Group (GIG) and report to the Chief Marketing Officer. The Sr. Manager will be responsible for developing and orchestrating campaigns spanning multiple communication channels in several key countries. The goal is to provide groundbreaking evidence for the scientific, policy, media, and public dialogs that shape health policy and practice so that all people live long lives in full health.

The Senior Manager will be a globally-savvy leader, expert project manager, and natural problem solver, who is skilled at uncovering assumptions, inventing solutions, and building consensus on highly complex topics. They will establish goals and define systems that ensure the strategic development, staffing, resourcing, execution and integration of campaigns across IHME. In collaboration with other teams on GIG, they will be responsible for proactively identifying, creating, and disseminating high-quality stories and content that demonstrate the policy-relevance of IHME’s results and methods in compelling ways. The ideal candidate will be experienced with managing people with their own portfolios of work and directing the work of other colleagues. They will be passionate about, and experienced with, making data-driven decisions, synthesizing varied inputs into clear strategies, and setting clear success goals/KPI’s.

This position is contingent upon project funding availability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision
  • Supervise a team of highly skilled individuals by assigning work hours, managing workflow, priority setting, and monitoring progress.
  • Hire and train team members, providing guidance, coaching and support, and course-correcting guidance, up to dismissal, when necessary
  • Ensure the team delivers to the highest standards of the organization
  • Identify and foster opportunities to advance individuals’ knowledge and abilities
  • Ensure the team works effectively with other groups at IHME - promote cross-organization teamwork
  • Assess and map project deliverables to resource needs
  • Advise on short- and long-term team structure including providing input on recruitments

Management and Strategic Planning
  • Develop structures and systems to support a global team and to facilitate the rapid flow of relevant information.
  • Cultivate and oversee a portfolio of coordinated campaigning strategies to develop the Institute brand; develop and evolve a strategy for each, including scoping, resourcing, and formalizing partnerships, and monitoring and measuring progress toward deliverables.
  • Monitor and assess risks related to IHME’s reputation and provide guidance to IHME leadership to minimize such risks.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify strategic opportunities by reviewing the landscape of marketing and communications on a range of health and global development topics and develop strategic plans for IHME’s work to be woven into the global dialogue. 

Campaign Management
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of a multi-year strategy and schedule campaigns focused on the most topical themes and critical institute outputs around which IHME can concentrate its marketing and engagement energy and advance our mission.
  • Ensure campaigns have a clear long-range vision, measurable goals (KPI’s), work plan and budget and that those efforts are integrated and complementary with the population health initiative at the University of Washington.
  • Build and deepen strategic relationships with global health organizations, government agencies, NGO’s, policy makers, media outlets and constituents to advance goals.
  • Develop and oversee events, owning the strategy, development, platform, promotion strategy and execution of event programs that help promote and grow IHME’s portfolio or work that will help people live longer and healthier lives.
  • Coordinate teams of marketing professionals (and vendor partners) spanning traditional media outreach, digital media outreach, content, visual design/branding; hold teams to account for key deliverables
  • Work in partnership with a diversity of teams to deliver key assets and outreach efforts in conjunction with concerted pushes by IHME (e.g. release of major publications, key events like the World Health Assembly).

Knowledge Command
  • Develop and deploy a comprehensive understanding of the key concepts, methods, inputs, results, messages, and future implications of IHME’s research portfolio, and key issues in population health.
  • Develop and deploy a comprehensive understanding of campaigning, marketing, communications, and technology strategies at peer organizations and partner organizations, including their political and cultural contexts.
  • Develop in-depth familiarity with global health and development organizations around the world.
  • Become an apt emissary for IHME and its mission with high-level external actors from a variety of sectors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in liberal arts, social sciences, science, or related field and six years of experience in marketing role and/or communications (such as public relations, social media marketing, print or broadcast journalism) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Previous supervisory experience, with an ability to lead people, develop high performers, make staff-related decisions, and resolve conflicts.?
  • At least 5 years of project management experience, including a demonstrated ability to manage cross functional projects and a large portfolio of priorities, creatively solve problems, and reliably meet deadlines with minimal supervision.?
  • Ability to operate adroitly in and analyze a multi-stakeholder environment and facilitate the timely flow of relevant contextual information with strong attention to detail.?
  • Demonstrated knowledge of integrated marketing across a range of communication channels and audiences.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex collaborations and representing organizations across diverse social, cultural, and political contexts, including understanding political sensitivities, devising diplomatic and tactical approaches, adapting to organizational norms in a variety of settings, negotiating, influencing outcomes, and building rapport quickly.??
  • Superior written, oral, and listening skills, with the ability to adjust message and tone for a variety of audiences to communicate clearly, professionally, and diplomatically.?
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills; a cooperative team player, able to develop productive relationships and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders from a diverse set of disciplines, expertise, and backgrounds.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s Degree in communications, social sciences, science, or related field.
  • Prior experience transforming statistical information into compelling written and spoken content targeted at a general audience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of global health
  • Demonstrated knowledge of development issues
  • Proficiency in more than one language to help build a global, multilingual team.
  • Prior experience using Google Analytics, media monitoring software, and customer relationship management systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This position leads a global team and works with global audiences and stakeholders; as such, evening and weekend work may be required to fulfill job duties.
  • This position is open to anyone authorized to work in the U.S. The UW is not able to sponsor visas for staff positions.
  • International and domestic travel may be required up to 30% of the time. 
  • Office is located in Seattle, Washington. This position is eligible to work fully remote in the United States (excluding US Territories); work schedule can be flexible to employee needs. The supervisor will determine the final schedule based on team needs.  
  • Valid passport or the ability to obtain one is required.
