Development Scientist I/II – Analytical Method Developer

New England Biolabs (NEB) is seeking a driven scientist with a background in enzymology or biochemistry. The person in this role will work with a diverse team of scientists to refine and develop molecular biology assays with a focus on transfer to our GMP-Grade facility. The ideal candidate will be proficient in developing and validating new methods with minimal supervision. The role will include development of analytical test methods to support new product development as well as existing products across different product areas. This position is based in our new research and development facility in Beverly, MA.

Primary Responsibilities:                       

  • Develop GMP compliant assays for current products, including QCs, as well as activity assays for a variety of different enzyme types
  • Develop assays in conjunction with GMP staff to provide deliverable of final assay development reports
  • Manage multiple development projects to meet rigid timelines
  • Oversee method transfers between departments
  • Serve as analytical resource for the department

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related field
  • Strong biochemical and molecular biology background
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Goal oriented team player with a strong work ethic
  • Experience with assay development, including identification of optimal methods as well as method integration into existing workflows
  • Experience with enzymatic activities covering all aspects of molecular biology including but not limited to polymerases, nucleases, phosphatases, ligases, and other nucleic acid modifying enzymes
  • Diverse experience with common laboratory instrumentation and assay technologies including qPCR, fluorescence plate readers, colorimetric and fluorescence assays, liquid chromatography, etc.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • 2-4 years relevant experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with method validations and method transfers
  • Theoretical and/or practical knowledge of specialized instrumentation and analytical technologies such as UPLC, capillary electrophoresis, etc.
