Process Development Scientist, Protein Expression and Modification Division

The Protein Expression and Modification Division of New England Biolabs (NEB) invites applicants for the position of Process Development Scientist. The successful applicant will work within a small interdisciplinary group to improve the performance of protein production clones. This position offers exciting opportunities to develop new tools for heterologous protein expression and advance genome engineering and cloning technologies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, plan, and execute cloning strategies to improve protein expression in microbial hosts.
  • Design and assemble protein expression plasmids using state of the art cloning techniques.
  • Investigate new methods for gene cloning and purification of difficult protein products.
  • Conduct small scale protein expression and purification experiments.
  • Conceive, plan and execute strategies to engineer bacterial strains to optimize product yield and purification processes.
  • Investigate new methods for microbial genome engineering.
  • Independently set up controlled experiments, troubleshoot methods, analyze data, and document results. 
  • Present experimental results, conclusions and interpretations at division and interdisciplinary team meetings.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.S/M.S degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a molecular biology lab.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, optimize and solve challenging protein expression and/or genome engineering problems.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as vector construction, recombinant DNA cloning, PCR, nucleic acid isolation, bacterial cell transformation, competent cell preparation.
  • Experience with microbial genome engineering.
  • Proficient with software applications such as Geneious and MS Excel.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects within a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a creative, passionate, detail-oriented person with excellent analytical, verbal and written communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Publication record demonstrating experience with recombinant protein expression, bacterial genome engineering, and/or recombinant DNA cloning.
  • Experience with several microbial cell-based protein expression systems.
  • Experience with recalcitrant bacterial strains, toxic or insoluble protein products, fusion proteins, and multi-gene constructs.
  • Experience with whole genome sequencing, whole cell transcriptomics, and proteomics.
  • Experience with small scale fermentation in bioreactors.
  • Training in DOE methods for experimental design and data analysis.
