MATERIALS ENGINEER -- SPACE & PROPULSION

General Summary
This position works as part of a team within the Space & Propulsion Systems Department. More than 60% of the position will entail supporting the department with leading material evaluation projects for systems within the Department of Defense, NASA and their government subcontractors. Examples of materials being evaluated include CMCs, C/C, refractory metals, ablative materials, PMCs, and ceramic materials. The temperature range for testing would consist of cryogenic to ultra-high temperatures. The remaining 40% of the position will be a balance of facility and test development to assist others in pushing new technologies in the labs and proposing testing efforts in support of RFP/RFQs. Candidates with interest and knowledge in the areas of structural composites, high-temperature materials, mechanical design, and heat transfer are encouraged to apply. The candidate must be proficient in MATLAB, SolidWorks and exhibit strong initiative with demonstrated competency executing projects. Planning, prioritizing, and goal setting are key skills necessary for this position. Knowledge of mechanical design and convective heat transfer are desired. This position is responsible for applying scientific concepts, theories, and research practices in creative and innovative ways. Mechanical Engineer will prepare, present, and follow up on research proposals of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration; and working under general supervision where work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and consistency with organizational goals and strategies.

  • Managing research projects of moderate size from initiation through machining, testing, analysis and reporting.
  • Prepare, present, and follow-up on research proposals of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration. 
  • Responsible for leading and managing projects or project tasks of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration.
  • Develop or direct the development of research findings, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
  • Recommend changes in procedures and devise new approaches to deal with problems encountered.

  • Lead marketing and project development activities in defined market areas.
  • Interact with research scientists and associates in multiple areas of the organization.
  • Participate in the technical evaluation of assigned staff and in the identification of their development needs.
  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET
  • MS degree in relevant discipline or BS with 3-4 years' relevant experience
  • Relevant background in heat transfer, lab testing or related materials discipline
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. in Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • 1-5 years of experience in materials research and/or mechanical testing
  • Active Security clearance
