YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

The Conservation Practitioner III performs and participates in preserve operations including the maintenance, management, development and coordination of conservation and restoration programs.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct routine preserve management work such as removal of invasive species, grassland management, ecological monitoring, fence construction and repair, and other related stewardship activities.
  • Assists with land management and restoration planning.
  • Ensures personal safety and safety of crew by following all safety procedures mandated by state/federal law and TNC policies.
  • Tracks and records work progress including invasive species, thinning, and Rx fire treatments.
  • Tracks and manages restoration objectives, budget and schedule.
  • Builds, cultivates, and maintains relationships with landowners and key partners including public agencies and non-profit organizations.
  • Assists with planning and implementation of prescribed fire.                                          
  • Assist with fire line construction, implementation of prescribed burns and mop-up activities. Maintain equipment and tools used on prescribed burns.
  • Operate fire equipment, if qualified, including ignition devices, 4WD trucks, ATV’s, UTV’s, portable pumps, pump engines, port-a-tanks, tractors, backpack blowers, brush cutters, chain saws, hand tools, and GPS units.
  • Perform fire preparations, including tractor mowing, tree cutting, chainsaw work, raking, handline construction, and boundary delineation.
  • Drives 4WD truck and UTV with crew and supplies on remote, backcountry roads.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • May organize, lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, managing contractors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets. 
  • May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context. 
  • May work in variable and extreme weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Efficiently operates and maintains tools and equipment (chainsaws, brushcutter, UTV’s, ATV’s, weed trimmer)
  • Assist with Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP).
  • Assist Universities, Colleges and other agencies with research project implementation and coordination
  • Firearm possession/use is permitted under the following instances:
  • Euthanasia
  • Preserve Stewardship and Management: Control of certain animals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1-year related experience in ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.                   
  • Experience with ecological land management principles and ability to apply science to decision making to guide management and restoration actions.
  • Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.   
  • Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm.
  • Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual.
  • Must have familiarity with the safe operation of equipment and off-road vehicles and must follow recommended safety guidelines and precautions specified for said work.
 
 
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) or working towards Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) certification highly desirable.                                    
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 2 or more years related experience in ecological restoration/land management.
  • Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices with respect to ecological restoration principles and able to plan and prioritize restoration activities i.e thinning, Rx fire, grazing, exotic and invasive species eradication.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers, ArcGIS). 
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Experience working with and understanding all aspects of prescribed fire as a management tool.
  • Willingness and ability to further training and experience with prescribed fire.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and occasionally to work weekends and maintain a flexible work schedule.
