Summer Internship: Research Methodologist (Graduate/PhD Student/GS-09)

Education Requirement

To qualify for this position, you MUST be enrolled in a graduate or equivalent degree seeking program majoring in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position (examples: research methodology, statistics, or quantitative methodology). You MUST also meet one of the following criteria:

1. You must have completed 36 or more semester hours or 54 or more quarter hours of graduate level education. - OR -
2. You must possess a Master's Degree or equivalent Graduate Degree.

About the Internship

This internship is with GAO's Center for Design, Methods, and Analysis (CDMA). CDMA assists teams on methodological, analytical, and technical research issues. More specifically, interns will:

  • Assist senior methodologists in selecting and implementing appropriate methodologies for engagements in accordance with GAO standards;
  • Participate in aspects of design, researchable question development, data collection and analysis, message development, and report writing and ensure the quality and value of the final product;
  • Collaborate with senior methodologists on recommending strategies to collect data for engagements. Selects, refines, organizes, and presents factual information and analysis in support of engagement objectives. Assists engagement team members with determining scope, form, content, and depth of analysis;
  • In conjunction with team members and other specialists/methodologists: assist in developing and pretesting questionnaires, structured interviews and other data collection instruments used to collect primary data to meet the goals of the engagement. May also assist in design and facilitation of small group methods;
  • Assist in evaluating and analyzing data to determine relevance and reliability. Performs indexing and referencing tasks, as required and
  • In conjunction with team members and senior methodologists, assist in developing findings and recommendations and assists in preparing GAO products that provide factual and analytical information in a clear, balanced manner that meets the needs of congressional clients.
