Environmental Specialist II (Remediation Project Officer) - #P0595

What you will be doing:

The Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Land Protection and Revitalization, is seeking qualified candidates to oversee remediation projects subject to state and federal cleanup programs in the Voluntary Remediation (VRP) and Brownfields Program. The successful candidates will also be responsible for projects enrolled in the Voluntary Remediation Program. This position will ensure that sites contaminated by solid and hazardous waste constituents are adequately investigated and remediated to protect human health and the environment to include engineering and institutional controls, where appropriate.

Minimum Starting Salary: $48,391 – Negotiable Based on Experience
 
Qualifications: The successful candidates will have demonstrated experience with site investigations, remedial designs, and risk assessments. Key competencies to include:
 
  • Knowledge of environmental science; pollution control concepts; environmental engineering principles and practices; federal and state laws, regulations and programs
  • Working knowledge of CERCLA, RCRA Corrective Action, Voluntary Remediation and the Virginia Brownfields procedures strongly preferred.
  • Project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to balance regulatory and technical requirements with common sense, results-oriented decision making to include risk management approaches.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate agility in response to challenges. 
  • PC skills (word processing, spreadsheets, and database management), with ability to utilize micro-computer software programs to improve production and efficiency related to programs and projects
  • Must be sensitive to public attitudes and concerns while effectively carrying out the agency mission.
  • Valid driver’s license
 
Qualifications preferred but not required:
  • Actual site assessment, remediation technologies and engineering design review experience/education is preferred. 
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in engineering, geology, hydrogeology, or other natural science; equivalent training and experience may substitute for preferred degree.
