Qubit Control Engineer II

Description

HRL Laboratories is a world leader in research and development of numerous technologies, including additive manufacturing, materials science, optical sensors, and quantum information science.
We’re looking for someone to join a team committed to improving control of quantum-dot-based spin qubits. This position requires knowledge of electrical engineering with a strong applications focus. Must be comfortable with electrical circuit design and measurement techniques for high-bandwidth and high fidelity analog signals. Successful candidates will have the ability to apply engineering principles and concepts in creative ways to characterize control systems against evolving and challenging requirements that are needed for cutting-edge operation of spin qubits.
Above all, the position requires good scientific communication skills, a strong work ethic, enjoyment of problem solving, and a natural scientific curiosity.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Learn and understand how electrical signals drive quantum operations of spin qubits. Collaborate with scientists and engineers to understand and refine control requirements. Develop, implement, and document measurement techniques and use them to characterize control system performance, including signal generation and transmission. Contribute to specification and design of custom electronic equipment. Become an expert at spin qubit control and advise component teams on how to balance a complex trade space spanning simplicity, diagnostic capability, control fidelity, etc. Create and perform advanced measurements that utilize spin qubits to fully validate control systems. Perform on technical teams that tackle high-risk, high-impact qubit control problems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BA/BS + 2 years in electrical engineering, physics, computer science or related field, or equivalent knowledge gained through industry experience. Candidates with different experience levels will be considered for other positions.
  • Knowledge in a combination of the following: circuit design, microwave/RF engineering and analysis, low-noise measurement techniques
  • Prefer some knowledge and familiarity of EDA software and techniques; knowledge of cryogenic physics is a plus
  • Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability and desire to work in a collaborative, team-based environment that integrates computer science, data science, physics, and engineering
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to climb ladders to use elevated test equipment. Must be able to work safely in a laboratory environment, and be on-site at least 4 days a week.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
US Citizenship Required. Must have or be willing to apply for and maintain a security clearance.
This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
HRL offers a very competitive compensation and benefits package. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401K match, gym facilities, PTO, growth potential, and an exciting and challenging work environment.
