Research Assistant, International Development

Overview

AIR is seeking Research Assistants to join our International Development Division (IDD). These positions offer opportunities to gain first-hand research experience on exciting evaluations of development programs.
 
AIR’s IDD strives to improve the quality of life in low- and middle-income countries by using rigorous monitoring, evaluation, research, and technical assistance to enhance education and social development. We work across a wide range of topics including workforce development, agriculture/food/nutrition, early childhood development, education, refugees and migration, social protection, water/sanitation/infrastructure, and women's empowerment in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Central and Latin America as well as the Middle East. The IDD generates policy-relevant evidence through rigorous monitoring, evaluations, and research; helps improve program design through continuous learning and adaptation; and works with local organizations, funders, and governments to build sustainable solutions based on evidence. 
 
These positions can be remote or out of any of AIR's office locations in: Arlington, VA; Rockville, MD; Austin, TX; Chicago, IL; Chapel Hill, NC or Waltham, MA.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for the position include:
  • Conduct literature reviews to support projects and proposals
  • Assist staff in the review, identification and development of scholarly information describing research findings
  • Participate in the collection, analysis, and review of quantitative and/or qualitative research and evaluation data
  • Develop spreadsheets and databases to support project activities
  • Analyze quantitative and/or qualitative research data and contribute to the reporting and interpretation of findings


Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in such fields as economics, psychology, sociology, statistics, computer science, public policy, public health or other social science related fields
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of data collection and analysis methodologies and techniques, such as survey design, analysis of program administrative data, and conduct of structured interviews, observations, and focus groups
  • Experience with or inclination to learn and use statistical software programs (such as R, or Stata) to analyze data or coding data using qualitative data analysis software (such as NVivo, Atlas.ti, Dedoose, etc.)
Skills:
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when writing
  • Effective communicator
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite or the equivalent (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software)
  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a team
  • Experience living and/or working in countries outside the United States is required
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Fluency in any of the following languages preferred: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic
