Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Remote Sensing and Environmental Information Group in the Environmental Sciences Directorate (ESD), Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate (BESS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to support research and development efforts that improve the ability of Earth science researchers to find, visualize, and analyze diverse Earth science data.
The initial focus for this work is multispectral and hyperspectral data from airborne campaigns, as part of the NASA-funded ORNL Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC). However, this is a research area with a wide range of possibilities, and the evolution of the position from this starting point will be directed by both the selected candidate’s experience and interests as well as the available funding opportunities. The selected candidate will work collaboratively across ORNL, particularly with the Data and AI Systems Research Section in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop methods and tools that improve the ability of Earth science researchers to find, visualize, and analyze diverse Earth science data, particularly data from field research campaigns and airborne platforms
- Develop methods and tools that improve the ability of Earth science researchers to integrate, visualize, and analyze Earth science data across disparate spatial and temporal scales, such as data from ground-based, airborne, and on-orbit platforms
- Collaborate with a diverse team of Earth system and computational scientists across ORNL, other DOE laboratories, NASA, and other research sponsors
- Publish results in appropriate peer-reviewed formats, such as journal articles, and in open-source repositories
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Earth Science, Computing Science, an Engineering discipline, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
- A solid foundation in both some aspect of Earth science (particularly ecology or carbon cycle science preferred) and data science (particularly scientific visualization)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience visualizing and analyzing complex, multi-dimensional spatiotemporal data, particularly multispectral or hyperspectral imaging
- Experience working with cloud-optimized data formats, such as cloud optimized GeoTIFF, Zarr, or chunked netCDF/HDF
- Experience as an Earth science researcher or supporting Earth science research, preferably in a cross-disciplinary, multidisciplinary, or transdisciplinary research team to advance science
- Experience in the software development lifecycle, particularly in terms of writing tools to be used by other scientists
- Ability to report regular progress and publicize results through contributions to manuscripts, reports, conference presentation, and open-source documentation
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
