Regional Warm Water Biologist

Job Title: Warm Water Aquatic Biologist II, DWR - SRO


Job Description:
Come work with us in the amazing setting of red rock. The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources is seeking a Warm Water Aquatic Biologist, who will implement fisheries monitoring and management at Lake Powell and other warm water fisheries in Southern Utah.
 
Preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelor's degree or higher in fisheries, aquatic biology, wildlife management, or a directly related field, and/or to those with full-time related experience. 


Principle Duties:
As a Wildlife Biologist II, you will:
  • Provide recommendations for fisheries management at Lake Powell and other warm water fisheries in Southern Utah
  • Monitor fish populations to develop management recommendations and provide anglers with information
  • Analyze biological data and interpret results, write reports summarizing findings and develop management recommendations
  • Interact with National Park Service, State Parks, NGO's and other organizations as needed to better manage the fishery at Lake Powell and other warm water fisheries
  • Supervise and train Technician Positions
  • Maintain equipment, including bunkhouse, office, boats, nets, and other miscellaneous equipment

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have:
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries management or related field of study
  • Understand basic fisheries management concepts and the ability to communicate those efficiently
  • Have good communication skills and be able to articulate fisheries management concepts to the public in a way that is easily understood
  • Experience with boats, and their use on large water bodies
  • Have work experience with warm water fish, standard monitoring techniques, and management practices
  • Additional preference will be given to candidates with a Masters Degree in fisheries management or related fields

  • Basic understanding of fisheries management techniques
  • Ability to analyze and interpret freshwater fisheries data

  • Safely operate a boat in rough conditions
Supplemental Information
Working conditions:
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • Depending on the time of year, the Wahweap bunkhouse may be available for use when working at Lake Powell.
Physical requirements:
  • Work requires physical exertion. Work is performed in and around water. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough or slippery surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, heavy lifting (50 lbs.). Lift & maneuver nets and equipment while standing in awkward positions & on various surfaces.
  • Must be able to handle a boat in rough conditions
  • Camp and work in adverse conditions from bad weather to extreme heat
  • Ambient temperatures can exceed 110 degrees during summer months at Lake Powell
Other requirements:
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a valid Utah driver's license. 
  • Must be willing to be away from home for extended (week) periods camping on Lake Powell. 
  • Must be willing to travel throughout Utah to assist as needed with statewide projects
  • Must live within 50 miles of the Wahweap Area or Kanab Area or willing to relocate
  • Fishing license
  • Drivers license
  • Pesticide Applicators license at time of hire or must be obtained within probationary period.
