Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high caliber candidates for assignments within the National Security Internship Program (NSIP) for an Innovative Chemical-Biological Threat Reduction App Competition Internship.

PNNL is hosting its 9th Annual Summer Chem-Bio Defense Application Development Competition to foster novel and creative approaches for reducing chemical and biological threats. Interdisciplinary teams of interns, comprised of computer scientists, data scientists, and user design students, will work together to identify specific use cases, design, and develop fully functional software applications. Interns will be encouraged to leverage and adapt existing models, tools, and other methods to support the needs of the chemical and biological defense community. Over the course of the 10-week program, interns will gain mentorship from various field-related experts along with exposure to working in a national laboratory environment with governmental sponsors. At the conclusion of the program, a panel of domain experts will judge the intern apps and the winners will be awarded with cash bonuses. The competition will be managed to provide both a positive educational experience for the interns as well as a high-quality software product.

If you are looking to make an impact to the real world during your summer internship, this is your opportunity. Interns will have a chance to solve the real-world problems with direct feedback from target users. A selected app will be further developed and deployed for use by the target users.

Competition begins on June 7, 2022. Must be available during the full duration of the time period between June 7, 2022 through August 12, 2022.
