Lead Project Archivist at Zion National Park

Description:
The Great Basin Institute (GBI) is hiring a Project Archivist Research Associate to work cooperatively with Zion National Park (ZION) staff to support the Park’s museum program and project planning. The primary role of the position is to process, arrange, describe, catalog, and provide access to physical and digital archival collections according to NPS museum and records management policies and procedures specifically related to previous and ongoing projects at the park.
 
Archivist responsibilities will have a strong emphasis on processing (including, but not limited to appraising, arranging, rehousing, and minor preservation) and cataloging of Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Cedar Breaks National Monument records. Work would include appropriate arrangement of archival records in order to (1) provide a fixed and known location for every file unit so that it can be found when needed, and (2) bring related materials together in some logical order so that they can be used without prior knowledge of the existence of a particular document or file unit.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
 
·       Uses Interior Collection Management System to enter, retrieve, manipulate, analyze, and compile archives data.
·       Performs collection recordkeeping such as cataloging, maintaining and updating collection data, and producing box inventories and container lists.
·       Identifies data in archives catalog and accession records and other museum recordkeeping systems (e.g. archival finding aids, spreadsheets, digital image metadata) that need to be revised or corrected for accuracy or to better meet current data standards or registration practices.  
 
Additionally, the Archivist assists the Museum Curator with broader museum and archives tasks, including annual inventories, finding aids, rehousing collections, and working in the NPS Research Permit and Reporting System.
 
Timeline:
  • 52-week appointment beginning in mid-February, 2022
  • Full time (40 hours/week)
 
Location:
Zion National Park is a unique geological, natural, and cultural treasure in southwestern Utah. Opportunities for sightseeing, hiking, and camping abound. Humans have occupied this area for approximately 10,000 years and archaeological sites occur throughout the park. Work will be based out of park offices in Springdale, UT.

Qualifications:
Technical requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to archival collections and museums work including technical knowledge of archival methods, planning, procedures, and technology;
  • Experience with appraisal and evaluation, accessioning, processing, cataloging, description, and arrangement;
  • Knowledge of preservation techniques and storage environments;
  • Understanding of rehousing, handling, and treatment procedures and standards;
Additional requirements:
  • Experience working with researchers and providing public information;
  • Knowledge of the NPS cataloging and record keeping systems, desirable;
  • Knowledge of archival deterioration processes, health and safety procedures;
  • Familiarity with historic and modern media and information formats (i.e. graphic print, architectural drawing duplication formats, electronic media, audio and motion picture, photographs, etc.);
  • Practiced skills in processing (arranging and describing) archival collections, indexing, and working with finding aids;
  • Experience with database management, Word, and archival management software programs;
  • Ability to work independently or with limited supervision to resolve problems;
  • Ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner, verbally and in writing;
  • Comfortable with self-direction and demonstrated sound judgement;
  • Adaptability to changing project needs;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Willingness to coordinate with co-workers, Park staff, professional organizations, potential donors, libraries and university contacts, private companies, and the general public as needed;
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift and move heavy materials on a routine basis;
  • Willingness to work around potentially dangerous collections that may have been exposed to mold, insects, or vermin (wearing required PPE and following precautions); and
  • Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record.
Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.

All employees covered by this policy are required to be fully vaccinated as a term and condition of employment at Great Basin Institute. Employees are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completing primary vaccination with a COVID-19 vaccine, with, if applicable, at least the minimum recommended interval between doses.
