Community Nursery Program Manager

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Community Nursery & Training Center Manager
Our City Forest is an urban forestry non-profit serving communities throughout Santa Clara County since 1994. It operates a two-acre Community Nursery and Training Center which provides suitable, climate-appropriate species for planting across Silicon Valley. The nursery offers 350 species of drought-tolerant trees and plants cultivated by a team of full-time AmeriCorps service members and the help of 2,500 volunteers each year. 
The Community Nursery Manager trains, supports, and manages a team of service members and oversees all facets of the nursery facility, including: cultivation operations, customer outreach and support, inventory management, marketing, public open hours, revenue tracking, vendor communications, purchases of bare root stock and small container stock, education programming, special events, volunteer engagement, technical assistance, and facility maintenance and development.   
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee nursery operations including propagation/greenhouse operations, cultivation, maintenance, pruning, fresh and recycled water systems upkeep and expansion, hand-watering, demonstration gardens, and landscaping using best arboricultural and nursery management practices.
  • Provide ongoing training, management, supervision, and evaluation of a team of AmeriCorps service members. 
  • Develop annual work plan to effectively execute and delegate nursery tasks.
  • Perform daily scouting routes to prevent crop issues and enhance nursery work plan
  • Oversee customer support related to city permits, specifications, species and other technical assistance.
  • Track and oversee inventory, revenue and expense reporting, invoicing, and purchasing requests.  
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with wholesale customers and local agencies.
  • Oversee fundraisers, events, workshops, and trainings.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federally mandated nursery regulations including OSHA standards, pesticide use standards, and labor law compliance.
  • Promote the nursery volunteer program and provide ongoing opportunities and technical training. 
  • Oversee and direct additional tasks that support general program operations.
  • Assist in recruiting and training AmeriCorps members. 
  • Ensure compliance with AmeriCorps and OCF policies and regulations.
 Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 2 years nursery or horticulture experience
  • Minimum of 2 years management experience
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate assignments effectively
  • Experience in routine greenhouse procedures
  • Knowledge and experience with irrigation systems
  • Pass National Service Background Check, including Live Scan and fingerprint check
  • Possess a valid CA driver’s license
  • Ability to work full-time, Tuesday - Saturday, with willingness to work weekends and holidays, if necessary
  • Certified Arborist certification desirable
Terms and Salary
Compensation commensurate with experience. Benefits include combined vacation/sick leave, medical, dental, and vision insurance. The work schedule is Tuesday - Saturday, 40 hours per week.
