Content Developer/ Communicator

Are you passionate about communicating cutting-edge research to a general public audience? Love social media, video, and podcasts? If so, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL or “The Lab”) Communications Department, has an exciting full-time opportunity for you. 
 
Our communications team is seeking a content developer with at least a master’s degree in journalism, communications, or other relevant fields, and 0-3 years of relevant experience. Science writing, video, and podcast experience of some kind are essential, though we will train you on particular pieces of software and hardware. Also required: knowledge with at least 2 Adobe Creative Cloud apps or Final Cut Pro/ProTools; some background in science or engineering, either in school or in a job; ability to meet deadlines; proven ability to shoot compelling video – smartphone video counts, as long as it is compelling visual storytelling. You will report to the Creative Director. 
 
We are proud of our institution and mean to tell the world about it. The Lab recently upgraded its publishing platform, so this is an opportunity to help shape several new communications products. We focus on telling great stories about genetics, quantitative and plant biology, life at the lab, our vast art, and plant collection, and our rich century-plus of history. 
 
Responsibilities include: 
– Develop compelling news and feature stories (research news, personality profiles, event reports, blogs, history pieces, and interactive web features) drawn from throughout the institution. 
- Deliver stories in all media (print, video, digital, podcast) and channels (CSHL promotional materials/website, traditional media, etc.) 
- Pitch and/or post stories to the media and/or CSHL website and other platforms. 
- Work collaboratively with our Communications team to make content for campaigns across social and Internet media. 
- Work with analytics team to inform content development and deployment tactics. 
 
Full-time salary and benefits are competitive. The workplace is gorgeous. The commute is a pleasant 1.25 hours from Manhattan via Long Island Railroad and CSHL train shuttle. It is close to all major north shore Long Island highways.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in English, journalism, writing, communications, biology, or a related discipline and a Master’s degree preferred. 
 
Experience: Applicants with a degree in science must also have professional writing experience. A minimum of one to three years of professional communications experience is desired. Regardless of background, interest in scientific research in general and biology, in particular, is a requirement. 
 
Knowledge/Skills: The applicant must be able to work effectively with minimal supervision, but also work well as part of a team with other Communications staff. Strong written and verbal communication abilities are required for daily interaction with internal teams and external partners and stakeholders. Excellent organization skills and the ability to prioritize and manage projects, deadlines, and expectations are necessary.
