Staff Electrical Engineer

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participate in design and design reviews for large-scale electrical facilities including medium voltage electrical power transmission and distribution systems (e.g. 69 to 13.8kV, 20MVA main transformers; 15kV overhead lines, 15kV pad mount switches, and underground feeders)
  • Participate in design and design reviews for conventional building facilities (e.g.  low voltage electrical power distribution systems, standby generators, motor control centers, distribution boards, underground 600V wiring and cable tray systems)
  • Provide AutoCad assistance to develop sketches of talking points, design suggestions, one-line diagrams, and site maps
  • Provide calculations to verify design is compliant with codes and standards
  • Monitor construction activities, looking for compliance with contract drawings, possible interferences, and overall safety on the construction site
  • Perform contract administration duties including: responses to Requests for Information (RFI’s); scheduling; cost reporting; and estimates for contract change requests/orders
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Facilities, Marine engineering, or other related discipline
  • Minimum three to five years of design, construction, and/or with basic knowledge of the building trades applicable to electrical construction
  • Experience with medium voltage systems (1000V to 69kV) and low voltage systems (50V to 600V, AC and DC)
  • Preparation and review of electrical system design documents including one-lines and schematics. Should be familiar with Adobe Acrobat program
  • An understanding concepts of short circuit currents and voltage drop
  • Familiar with standard electrical equipment ratings: Voltage class, current rating, short circuit interrupting ratings
  • Familiar with the vectors for Apparent Power, Real Power, Reactive Power, and power factor. Also, familiar with power calculations including the use ‘Per Unit’ or ‘Base’
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and mechanical drawings
  • Ability to use AutoCAD to produce design drawings, modify drawings, and create as-built drawings
  • Excellent teamwork, effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to analyze data, write technical reports, and develop work packages. Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Hold or obtaining Engineer-In-Training or Professional Engineer status in New York State
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience and knowledge of the following:
  • NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code®
  • NFPA 70E- Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace
  • OSHA 1910.269
  • IEEE C2 - National Electrical Safety Code®
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
  • working on a heavy construction site
  • coordinating and interfacing with Architect/Engineering firms and construction personnel.
  • Three-line diagrams, DC control schematics, construction schedules.
  • Time-Current Curves, protective relay selection, relay settings, coordination studies, equipment testing, and start-up problem resolution.
  • Short circuit, voltage drop and arc flash calculations software from SKM Power Tools for Windows
  • Cost and Scheduling
  • OSHA 10-hour safety certification for construction
Environmental, Safety, and Health, Considerations:
  • Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 30 lbs
  •  Ability to enter confined spaces, climb fixed and portable ladders, and work at heights up to 30 feet.
  •  Ability to use of Personal Protective Equipment and be trained as a Radiation Worker
  •  Ability to occasionally work weekends or nights to support power outages or planned construction and work outdoors/cold environments or indoors/hot environments

  • Valid NYS driver’s license is required
  • Occasional travel may be required
