Position Description
The Business Services Directorate (BSD) has has an opening for a Business Specialist position within the Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science and Nonproliferation (EBNN) and Advanced Technology Research Office (ATRO) Business Office. This individual will report to the Business Operations Manager that currently oversees the EBNN Directorate and ATRO Business Office. 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Providing financial management assistance to both the EBNN and ATRO business staff which will include:
  • Tracking overall business performance by analyzing financial data and ensure data complies with BNL policies and procedures;
  • Team with department leaders and administrative staff in a rapidly growing area;
  • Maintain, develop and apply capabilities to execute organization’s plans;
  • Develop multi-year financial plans by working with the EBNN and ATRO business staff as well as the departmental group leaders;
  • Monitor, report and analyze all financial data with departmental principal investigators and work to be proactive in mitigating any negative impacts.
  • Serve as the departmental representative on all new proposals and act as the liaison between the business office and the principal investigators.
  • Responsible for internal/external financial reporting and financial oversight, including specialized reports.
  • Adherence to all BNL business rules, allowable cost monitoring and compliance.
  • Operating in a team environment and remaining flexible with assignments.
  • Basic knowledge should include budget planning, labor forecasting, development of current year cost plans, analysis of current year cost, rate development and preparation of financial summaries for management, periodic program reviews and Laboratory planning exercises.
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • At least four (4) years of experience in substantive and relevant work. A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance/business or directly related field, or equivalent experience based on 2:1 (experience:college) years.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including intermediate skills with Excel and databases.
  • Understanding of financial principles including budget, forecasting, reporting and analysis.
  • Clear, concise, professional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Applies independent judgments that demonstrates ability to prioritize and effectively deal with deadlines.  
  • Ability to establish routine contacts and the ability to provide detailed and complex information that will be used to make decisions of business consequence.
  • Able to identify and resolve issues encountered within own area of responsibility; act proactively to develop solutions and provide recommendation to avoid problems.
  • Should be a flexible team player who will successfully interact with both the scientific and business staff and will be motivated to assist Business Operations Manager as requests arise.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP) including the extraction and reporting of data.
  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft and the ability to generate queries and reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Laboratories Financial system, policies and procedures.
  • Financial Project Management experience.
