Position Description
The Collider-Accelerator Department Writer/Editor will have an integral role within C-AD Environmental, Safety, Security, Health & Quality (ESSHQ) Division in the writing and editing of C-AD’s Safety Assessment Documents (SADs), Accelerator Safety Envelops (ASEs) and other safety related documents. These documents are essential to the safe and successful operation of the Collider-Accelerator Department.
In this capacity you will also supervise the group within the ESSHQ Division responsible for assisting departmental personnel in the development, editing and issuance of operational procedures which support C-AD’s Conduct of Operations program. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for writing initial drafts of the departmental authorization basis documents, i.e. Safety Assessment Documents (SADs) and Accelerator Safety Envelops (ASEs). Once drafted, subsequent work entails performing complex editorial functions that require the ability to synthesize meaning and content into a clearly written document for a general audience.
  • Collaborating with managers and technical staff to revise and publish departmental authorization basis documents, operational procedures and other safety related documents electronically and, when required, in print.
  • Identify areas of continuous improvement within established departmental documentation related processes and procedures.
  • Supervise the ESSHQ Documentation group in the implementation of BNL standard related requirements and in the execution of processes needed to maintain the C-AD Conduct of Operations documentation requirements.
  • Submit final revisions of the departmental authorization basis documents, operational procedures and other safety related documents to C-AD management for approval.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and use of a new platform for storage, maintenance and configuration management of C-AD’s authorization basis documents, operational procedures and other safety related documents.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or scientific discipline or in a field such as English, Communications, Journalism or directly related, progressively complex equivalent experience, generally on the basis of 2:1 (experience: college) years.
  • Minimum of 4 years full-time, directly related work experience showing progressively more complex responsibilities in a substantive role which provides evidence of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize meaning and intent into clearly written documents.
  • Experience in writing/editing documents and adhering to version control processes.
  • Proficiency in web-based tools for creating and editing web pages as well as Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to work with a multicultural and diverse population at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise personal initiative in identifying and solving problems.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Visio.
  • Preferred editorial experience includes developmental editing (substantial editing of content for clarity, paragraph structure, sentence flow, word choice, etc.), copyediting (editing for proper grammar and punctuation), and proofreading (final quality review).
  • Experience working in a scientific or technical organization.
  • Knowledge of nuclear or accelerator facility operations.
