Thermal Mechanical Design Engineer

Please apply here.

Modern Electron has an immediate opening for a Thermal Mechanical Design Engineer to support system development.
In this role, you will work closely with an internal team, external development partners, and contractors to develop chemical reactor system designs and configurations that meet technical performance, reliability and safety requirements, cost, and schedule specifications. You will perform thermal-mechanical design and analysis (FEA), prepare design sketches, CAD models, and drawings; select materials; and develop reactor systems, subsystems, and component specifications.
Modern Electron is a sustainable heat and power technology company backed by Bill Gates. We help buildings and homeowners save money, reduce carbon emissions, and increase resiliency during power outages. >$40MM venture capital is committed to our vision. We have enormous potential for learning, impact, and growth in a small and collaborative team setting. We value our ability to move fast to outpace larger companies and achieve what they cannot.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design, evaluate, and analyze our next generation hydrogen generators
  • Create thermal-mechanical designs of devices and components from lab to pilot scale for high temperature applications
  • Perform first order hand calculations and use FEA to model device and component performance, including steady-state and transient heat transfer and thermal-mechanical stress analysis, creep and fatigue studies, etc.
  • Perform tolerance analysis as required to ensure intended assembly performance
  • Assist in developing device assembly strategies, methods, and associated processes
  • Interface closely with multidisciplinary experimental and computational teammates to iterate on designs and test/validate models/designs
  • Create mechanical drawings for components, subsystems, and assemblies
  • Construct and conduct parametric trade-off studies and communicate results to teammates

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5+ years of thermal mechanical design engineering experience in an industrial and/or commercial environment
  • 3+ years experience in the design and analysis of high temperature chemical reactors or components
  • Demonstrated experience with pilot or commercial operations of processes such as temperature swing adsorption, thermal oxidizers, gasification, steam methane reforming, autothermal reformers, or similar reactions.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with thermal-mechanical FEA using analysis tools such as ANSYS Workbench
  • Understanding of heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation) and mechanics of materials
  • Experience utilizing laboratory and field test data to validate models
  • Hands-on experience using CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) in the creation of complex mechanical models, mechanical drawings, and assembly drawings
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Impeccable written and verbal communication
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a highly collaborative, dynamic, and diverse team
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or similar

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree with 5+ years of industry experience
  • Experience with high temperature materials and applications above 1000C
  • Understanding of metal to metal and metal to ceramic joining methods and joint design
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes used to produce mechanical hardware products and/or experience with DFM/DFA, including ceramics
  • Hands-on experience designing reactor design and operations
  • Understanding of operational and design challenges for high temperature thermal equipment for reliability and safety.
  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and its application toward the creation of fabrication drawings for mechanical parts
  • Python programming experience
  • Experience working in a startup environment
