Combustion Engineer

Please apply here.

Modern Electron has an immediate opening for a Combustion Engineer to support chemical reactor design and development programs. The Engineer will work with a team to develop combustion subsystems of our 2nd generation chemical reactor programs.

In this role, you will be working with a team of Thermal-Mechanical and Chemical Engineers to design a combustion system that meets required performance, reliability and safety, cost, and schedule specifications. You will perform conceptual design and combustion/burner analyses; prepare design sketches and layouts; select raw materials; design and install new experimental burner/combustion test hardware; perform combustion experiments; and analyze test results.

Modern Electron is a sustainable heat and power technology company backed by Bill Gates. We help buildings and homeowners save money, reduce carbon emissions, and increase resiliency during power outages. >$40MM venture capital is committed to our vision. We have enormous potential for learning, impact, and growth in a small and collaborative team setting. We value our ability to move fast to outpace larger companies and achieve what they cannot.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and assemble combustion test rigs, perform combustion experiments, and analyze test results with safety as a top priority
  • Help create drawings and P&ID for experimental combustion components, sub-systems, and other mechanical assemblies
  • Support burner design concept generation, analysis, and optimization
  • Interface closely with combustion sub-system component suppliers to specify and purchase components.
  • Interface with the multidisciplinary experimental, computational, and design teams to support validating analytical models with burner test data and iterate on prototype designs
  • Validate designs to inform scale-up to pilot and demonstration scale units.
  • Support the evaluation of next-generation designs by the R&D and Engineering teams

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and testing combustion/burner test setups
  • Hands-on experience planning and performing combustion experiments in a laboratory environment.
  • Scaling up combustion systems, and theoretical/computational analysis of combustion systems
  • Knowledge of combustion chemistry, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics including: flame propagation in complex fuel mixtures and combustion kinetics & chemistry
  • Experience analyzing laboratory and/or field test data to correlate and validate analytical models
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Impeccable written and verbal communication
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a highly collaborative, dynamic, and diverse team

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or similar
  • 3+ years of commercial or industrial experience designing combustion equipment and related support systems for residential, commercial, or industrial applications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Background in combustion and emissions optimization for high-temperature process heating, chemical reactors, gas boilers, gas furnaces, or micro-combustion/HVAC burner systems
  • Hands-on experience using CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) to create mechanical models, fabrication drawings, and assembly drawings
  • Startup company experience
