UX/UI Researcher (B.S./M.S./Ph.D.) (Minneapolis, MN; Boston, MA)

UX/UI Researcher

Location: Minneapolis/Boston

Note: Due to the nature of our contract work, positions at SIFT are restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. Also, this position requires that you be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless you require a reasonable accommodation for religion or a health-related need.

SIFT researchers have developed novel tools to improve information flow between the system and the user, utilizing more than 20 years of experience in UI design and management. We have employed various techniques including designing adaptable interfaces, using ecological design techniques to improve the user’s situational awareness, and constructing computational reasoning approaches to UI design, as well as working with SIFT's computational and social scientists to create a wide range of decision aids.

What will you do as a UX/UI Researcher at SIFT?

As a UX/UI Researcher at SIFT, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Design and implement creative and innovative ways to display spatiotemporal, relational, and visual data.
  • Work with novel hardware and software tools to develop innovative human-machine interaction capabilities and approaches.
  • Reduce cognitive 'information overload' by prioritizing information users need to see in a compact, easy-to-understand, intuitive fashion.
  • Measure and improve user experience for novel research projects in provenance analysis, human-robot interaction and other human-AI/automation/machine interaction research, and other research domains.
  • Design, conduct and analyze usability reviews and human-subjects experiments to guide and/or validate your designs
  • Have the freedom to pursue your own ideas about improving human experience with advanced technologies.

What kind of background is needed for this role?

While experience with all UX/UI tools is not necessary, we have a particular need for applicants who have exposure to:
  • Front end web development
  • CSS
  • HTML
  • Javascript
  • React
  • D3

We also desire (but do not strictly require)
  • Enough Python experience to debug and modify back-end web service and data-providing components.
  • Experience with Unity

Through the interview process, we’ll be looking for evidence of these qualifications, but we don’t require any specific technical skills. We recognize these qualifications may be embodied in different ways — in fact, we get most excited by new ways people embody these that add something new to our team!

Likewise, we don’t have a specific requirement for degrees or years of work experience. However, we have observed that many of these qualifications are developed through full-time work experience (either as a data scientist or something else entirely), participation in community organizations, open-source software projects, graduate academic research, or something else.
