Associate Developer/Cloud Engineer

Location: Minneapolis/Boston

SIFT is a research company with a focus on academic work, not a product-oriented, software engineering company. In our DevOps/SysOps environment, we run a variety of services, open-source, COTS, and ROTS, some of which are tailored to the niche requirements the research projects. We want an energetic, junior- to mid-level DevOps engineer, and we want you to learn new things as our infrastructure constantly grows and shifts. We are looking for someone who is interested in working as part of a team to tackle the unique problem of developing an infrastructure capable of integrating into our research projects, across of fields including autonomous cybersecurity, NLP, automated planning, AI (planning, plan recognition, machine learning), and computational social sciences. You will be working with the full stack, from the top level cloud software to physically interacting with the server hardware, as well as working directly with research teams to help develop and maintain their projects.

What will you do as an Associate Developer/Cloud Engineer at SIFT?

As a Associate Developer/Cloud Engineer at SIFT, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Assist in developing infrastructure capable of integrating into a broad spectrum of research projects.
  • Work with the full stack, from the top level cloud software to physically interacting with the server hardware.
  • Work alongside research teams to develop, maintain, and deploy innovative research projects.
  • Identify and investigate solutions to potential infrastructure vulnerabilities.
  • Improve robustness in support of research projects.

We welcome candidates who not only want to deploy/develop infrastructure in support of novel research projects, but are also interested in contributing directly to research as well. Research contributions can be through code implementation, creating designs, contributing to proposals for funding, or some combination.

What kind of background is needed for this role?

SIFT's research infrastructure needs are constantly changing, thus applicants should have interest and ability to quickly learn new or related concepts. Preferred qualifications include:
  • B.S. in Computer Science, or similar field.
  • Strong desire to learn new tools and systems, to keep up with our research driven architecture.
  • Knowledge of web frameworks.
  • Contributions to open source projects.
  • Hands-on experience with (server-grade) computing hardware.
  • Knowledge of networks, both physical and logical, including firewalls, switches, vlans, etc.
  • Background in IAAS (Infrastructure as a service), esp. Ansible, Proxmox, Kubernetes, Ceph.
  • Experience configuring and securing Linux, Mac, and/or Windows systems.

While broad exposure to the topics above is a desired, applicants with some experience PLUS a strong desire and ability to learn quickly will be considered as well.
