Research Technician I/II – Immunologic models of metastasis

Overview

Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

research technician I/II position (full-time) is available immediately in a laboratory within Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Translational Research Program. The Laboratory for the Study of Metastatic Microenvironments focuses on understanding the biology underlying disseminated tumor cell (DTC) dormancy and formulating therapeutic means to eradicate dormant DTCs. We are looking for a dynamic, bright, meticulous, and highly motivated individual to join our team to help us build better metastasis models in order better understand DTC-stromal-immune interactions, and perform pre-clinical trials in the most realistic settings.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in immunology, tumor metastasis, mouse modeling and application of cutting edge technologies. They will be responsible for performing standard and investigative laboratory work, including: following detailed, time-sensitive and challenging protocols to create tolerized mouse models and conduct tumor transplant experiments, conducting flow-based immunologic phenotyping experiments, conducting and quantifying tumor measurements by a variety in vivo and ex vivo imaging approaches, and by conducting and quantifying tissue-based immunofluorescence .

Responsibilities

This position will work under the Principal Investigator and work with a talented postdoctoral fellow in the lab to:
  • Adhere fastidiously to detailed protocols to generate murine models tolerized to fluorescent and bioluminescent antigens for tumor transplantation studies, using ultrasound guided in utero injection
  • Conduct tumor transplantation experiments and monitor them over the entire experimental timecourse
  • Conduct and/or assist with CRISPR screens in these models
  • Perform flow-based immune cell phenotyping experiments
  • Perform immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence on tissue specimens
  • Perform a variety of imaging techniques to quantify tumor and metastatic burden in these models
  • Keep detailed and meticulous records
  • Perform statistical analyses to analyze resulting data
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in cell biology, immunology, bioengineering, or related disciplines required
  • Research Techn I minimum qualifications- Must have scientific knowledge in the area of study and basic laboratory skills. Independent research experience in addition to school lab experience is usually necessary
