Generator Engineer

Job Description:
The Generator Specialist (GS) will support construction and maintenance efforts across Calpine’s generator, exciter, and collector fleet. With safety at the forefront, the GS will balance quality workmanship, outage planning, repair necessities, and risks against the constraints of time, budget, and market requirements to develop and help fulfill efficient and prudent generator work scopes.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Support generators, exciters, and collectors maintenance needs and planning, both remotely and onsite.
  • Supervise OEM’s and third party vendors in their generator-related scopes with an eye for Calpine’s best interests; including promoting and monitoring safety and quality, providing an in-house second opinion on the necessary work scopes, curtailing wasteful efforts, and taking necessary steps to keep the work scope moving ahead efficiently.
  • Perform inspections and electrical and mechanical maintenance testing on generators, exciters, and collectors.
  • Evaluate test and inspection data supplied by other vendors.
  • Provide maintenance and repair recommendations, creating and scheduling outage scopes accordingly.
  • Solicit and select vendors for quotes for outage scopes as necessary.
  • Instruct winders in performing repairs on generators, exciters, and collectors.
  • Write reports to document outage finding and activities, and provide recommendations for future outages as necessary.
  • Expand GS knowledge base, including keeping tabs on developments in testing and maintenance practices, as well as supervising mechanical disassembly/reassembly if necessary.
  • Research and develop improved inspection, testing, and repair techniques.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelors of Science degree or better in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred, but other degrees and education levels will be considered based on demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability.
  • Strong functional knowledge of generator inspection, testing, and maintenance practices.
  • 5+ years of GS experience.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and self-directed to work independently with minimal supervision, yet able to work as a team.
  • Curiosity and determination to drive innovative solutions and expand the acquired knowledge base.
  • Organizational skills, communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Pass drug screening.

Preferential Qualifications:
  • Significant experience with GE, Toshiba, Alstom, or aero-derivatives.
  • Military, OEM, or Merchant Marine power maintenance training.
  • 7+ years in the industry.
