Nuclear Waste Program Safety Officer

Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Nuclear Waste Program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Nuclear Waste Program Safety Officer (Safety Officer Assistant) position. This position is located in our Richland Field Office (RFO) in Richland, WA. 

As the Safety Officer for the Nuclear Waste Program, you will be responsible for leading the program’s Safety Committee, coordinating with staff to get their Hanford Site Clearance badges and Ecology badges, updating and maintaining the Building Safety Plan and Field Safety Manual, and being the point of contact for Employee Job Task Analysis. 

You will also assist with minor facility requests from staff, perform monthly building inspections, and monitor the performance of the janitorial staff. You will be the fleet Coordinator for the program, which includes receiving and filling fleet reservation requests from staff, shuttling vehicles back and forth to auto shops for regular scheduled maintenance, and performing weekly interior and exterior inspections of vehicles.

The Nuclear Waste Program's (NWP) mission is to lead the effective and efficient cleanup of the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site, to ensure sound management of mixed hazardous wastes in Washington, and protect the state's air, water, and land at and adjacent to the Hanford site.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is expected to be in the office approximately 2 days per week. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding building occupancy, mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.

Duties


What makes this role unique? 
This position has three separate roles: safety, facility coordination, and fleet management.

The Safety role is routine in nature and is for a professional office setting (low risk). You will need to perform duties outside in all types of weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, and snow). You will interact with a variety of stakeholders including Nuclear Waste Program staff, Ecology staff, other state and federal staff, and the public.


What you will do: 

  • Lead the Safety Committee, assist with agenda preparation, review and edit meeting notes, and update Safety Plans
  • Respond to workstation adjustment requests, and either make the adjustments or coordinate with the vendor to make adjustments
  • Coordinate fleet reservations 
  • Perform vehicle maintenance and inspections
  • Coordinate Hanford Site Clearance badges and Ecology badges
  • Coordinate Hanford required training for staff
  • Monitor janitorial performance and janitorial supplies that need to be ordered

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1:
Five (5) years of education and/ or experience:

  • Education: in occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education or allied fields.
  • Experience: in occupational safety and health programs.

Option 2:
  • Licensed as a Certified Safety Professional
  • One (1) year of experience in occupational safety and health programs.

Option 3:
  • A Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education or allied fields.
  • One (1) year of experience in occupational safety and health programs.

All experience and education combinations that meet the requirements for this position:


Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site Clearance badge.
