Technology Transfer Licensing Fellowship - Year-Round Graduate Intern

A student fellowship is available in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Technology Transfer Office (TTO). NREL is the nation's premier laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

We have an immediate opening for a fellowship in our Golden, Colorado office.  This position is part of a TTO fellowship program that assists the NREL licensing team in a variety of ways described below. The fellow will work directly with, and under the guidance of, TTO licensing executives in commercializing technologies developed at NREL.  Some duties require fellows to be on-site in Golden, CO, when safe and available; otherwise many elements of this role can be performed remotely.
Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing specific marketing summaries describing NREL technologies and corresponding intellectual property while identifying companies active within a certain market where the NREL technologies are likely to make contributions. 
  • Provide strategic information on each company, market-specific intellectual property landscapes, and, to the extent possible, appropriate points of contact for business development while leveraging the Department of Energy’s Lab Partnering Service.
  • Performing technological and market feasibility assessments for nascent NREL innovations including defining both beachhead and longer-term markets.
  • Assisting in establishing a basis for patent license financial terms and reviewing license agreements in negotiation.  This may include analysis of patenting strategies, intellectual property portfolio valuation, and projecting corresponding royalty streams for licensed NREL technologies.
  • Other projects that support the mission of TTO and NREL.

Basic Qualifications


Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications


Minimum 3.0 GPA in the last completed semester.
Must have a technical background in science/engineering or be enrolled in a technical writing program.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred: Candidates who are available on a part-time basis during the Spring 2022 semester of their graduate/MBA program and who are available to work at NREL on a full-time basis during the Summer of 2022 and on a part-time basis during the school year starting in the Fall of 2022 through the Spring of 2023.  Availability thereafter to be mutually determined by the fellow and NREL TTO.
