Indigenous People Program Intern
Our Arlington-based staff continues to work remotely and visit the office on a limited basis. When our office officially opens, in-office work schedules/locations will be determined in accordance with CI policies and in keeping with the role’s responsibilities. Hiring managers will provide guidance on hybrid or blended work schedules for the role in question when a candidate is contacted for an interview.

POSITION SUMMARY
Conservation International's Center for Communities and Conservation (CCC) works to ensure that CI and the broader conservation community implement a people-centered approach to conservation, honoring our obligations to and partnerships with Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) while safeguarding our planet for future generations. One of the ways we engage with and elevate the efforts of our Indigenous and local community partners is by providing fellowship opportunities specifically for IPLC conservationists, activists, and researchers. Through these fellowships, we promote the capacities of IPLCs through the exchange of relevant scientific information and traditional knowledge and the promotion of female and male Indigenous leadership.
The CCC currently oversees a growing portfolio of IPLC fellowships, including the Indigenous Leaders Conservation Fellowships, with tracks for both "Emerging Leaders" and "Indigenous Women Leaders", as well as the Sue Taei Ocean Fellowship. Other fellowship opportunities are ready to come online. The CCC seeks a part-time, limited-time intern to help support opportunities for reflection on the programs so far, and develop guidance for the programs moving forward.
This is a paid internship expected to begin on January or February 2022.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in bringing new fellowship online:
- Together with the ITTP Manager, develop objectives for new fellowship focused on IPLCs in Chile.
- Create fellowship launch materials (including application and scoring rubric).
- Launch application period.
- Review applications and select finalists.
Lead in organizing alumni fellows gatherings:
- Logistics and admin related to organizing alumni fellows gatherings (3 regional, 1 global)
- Together with ITTP Manager, develop objectives and facilitation plan for fellows gatherings
Collaborate in strategic thinking for Indigenous Fellowship program development
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position is based in Arlington, VA but is currently remote due to the pandemic.
- For the health and safety of our employees, their families, and our community, all US-based Conservation International staff are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. This mandatory vaccine requirement applies to all staff working remotely, in a hybrid work arrangement and on-site in CI US offices. Effective January 4, 2022, new hires will be required to provide proof of full vaccination with a government approved vaccine as a condition for employment. QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in progress.
- Experience with or interest in capacity building for conservation leadership.
- Experience with diverse stakeholder groups (previous experience working with Indigenous peoples and local communities preferred).
- Experience with program evaluation or strategic planning for non-profits.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint or similar programs.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Written and verbal fluency in Spanish and English.
