Clinical Research Coordinator - Chronic Post-traumatic Headache Study

Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) supports the nation's second largest research program conducted among the VA Hospitals and has an exciting career opportunity for a Clinical Research Coordinator to join a multi-site research study evaluating efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic post-traumatic headaches in Veterans and service members.
You will be supporting an impactful study which looks at non-pharmacologic treatments for Veterans and service members with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and chronic headaches (post-traumatic headaches). Post-traumatic headache is a debilitating problem for Veterans leading to significant long-term disability and has been resistant to existing treatment options. You and the research team will be looking at treatment effects of cognitive behavioral treatment in addition to standard of care treatment. The Palo Alto VA is one of seven national sites involved in the study.

As the Research Coordinator, you will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Molly Timmerman, Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation/Orthopedic Surgery at Stanford University. You will work with patients at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, where Dr. Timmerman serves as a Medical Director of Regional Amputation Center and the Polytrauma Network Site.

The Research Coordinator position plays a critical role at every stage of managing this clinical research study and you will have a tremendous professional growth opportunity through learning about all aspects of clinical operations.

This a full-time position, located in Palo Alto, CA. We offer work from home flexibility, but you will need to be on-site at the VA hospital in Palo Alto to perform most of the duties and occasionally drive to a clinic located in Livermore.

RESEARCH COORDINATOR'S MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage subject recruitment, screening, and data collection
  • Coordinate staff communication and project activities
  • Maintain regulatory compliance, procedures, and study materials.

YOU WILL ALSO SUPPORT THE STUDY IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

  • Monitor the progress of assigned clinical research subjects and provide regular updates to the PI;
  • Coordinate blood sample collection and prepare biological samples for shipment;
  • Work closely with the PI to coordinate communication across study team members including those at collaborating institutions; Organize meetings and conference calls and coordinate with study team members and clinical personnel;
  • Propose and enhance processes and tools for improving team workflow;
  • Manage the inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Obtain and maintain Stanford Institutional Review Board approval;
  • Ensure that all monthly and annual reporting requirements are met;
  • Coordinate the implementation of the study protocol;
  • Format reports, manuscripts and presentations consistent with style requirements of peer-reviewed scientific journals;
  • Review published literature.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience;
  • At least 1 year of relevant research experience, including subject recruitment and screening;
  • Prior experience with maintaining regulatory compliance and data collection;
  • Preferred: Master's degree; 2 years or more of relevant research experience and experience with the U.S. military: interacting with military personnel or Veterans in a professional or research environment.
  • Valid Driver's license for occasional trips to Livermore site.
  • Experience using computer programs such as Endnote and Microsoft Office products;
  • Organized, detail-oriented, self-directed, and dependable;
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize workload;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Excellent Microsoft Office computer skills;
  • Able to learn VA regulations and procedures regarding research;
  • Effective interpersonal skills, excellent verbal communication and written skills.
