Virginia State Park Youth Conservation Corps Crew Leader

If you love the outdoors, conservation and mentoring youth, this is a great summer opportunity for you!

As a crew leader for Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) you will spend one or two sessions of three weeks each living and working with two other leaders and a crew of 10 young people aged 14-17. YCC crews help parks with conservation projects as well as recreational enhancement. For instance, crews might construct picnic and camping pads to prevent erosion, make or maintain trails for people to enjoy, or control invasive plants to protect the environment.

Weekdays are spent working and building the team and weekends are for fun and adventure, ranging from hiking to biking, boating, visiting museums, caving and more depending on the location.

Crew leaders have many roles and are key to the success of YCC. This position is demanding but provides many rewards. Successful applicants demonstrate high standards, creative problem-solving, excellent judgment, and compassion for Virginia’s natural resources and young people. A crew leader’s primary responsibilities center on helping crew members in the field while ensuring their emotional and physical safety.

Leaders must be flexible to go to any park located within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Leaders must reside with crew members in provided housing and are responsible for maintaining a positive team atmosphere for the duration of the program. Leaders work with their team to plan various educational and recreational activities including at least one environmental education program a week. Leaders must minimize their use of cell phones, computers and other electronic devices.

Leaders are responsible for organizing crew schedules, keeping to a budget, maintaining equipment, and filling out required forms and evaluations. Leaders must submit receipts and documentation for the budget and submit them along with forms, evaluations, and all other documents and files to the program coordinator at the end of each session.
