Postdoctoral Research Associate - Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) and Spectroscopy

Overview: 
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
 
The Materials MicroAnalysis (MMA) Group in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences Division (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a candidate to fill a postdoctoral position in the high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and spectroscopy, which takes advantage of ORNL's suite of advanced electron microscopes, including five aberration-corrected instruments and one monochromated instrument. 
 
The successful applicant must demonstrate experience in electron microscope operation, preferably with experience in aberration-corrected STEM and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and a basic knowledge/interest in programing.
 
This position provides an opportunity to join an experienced team working in a highly collaborative environment on projects ranging from quantum and 2D materials, 1D materials, nano-photonics, and thin-film oxide materials. Interactions with theoretical researchers and computational scientists are anticipated on a daily basis.
 
Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Publish scientific results in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Research experience with transmission or scanning transmission electron microscopy
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with advanced EELS and STEM
  • Background in data analysis and programming in Python
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
