Postdoctoral Research Associate - Electron Microscopy and Tomography for Fuel Cells

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
 
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Materials MicroÅnalysis (MMÅ) Group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section of the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) who will work with advanced microscopy methods to characterize degradation mechanisms in catalysts and electrodes for low temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers.
 
As part of our research team, you will collaborate with world leaders in fuel cells and electrolysis through the Department of Energy, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), M2FCT, H2NEW, and ElectroCat consortia aimed at enabling hydrogen as an energy carrier. Your role will be to work with the suite of advanced scanning transmission electron microscopes (STEM) housed in CNMS and other core facilities to help drive the development of new catalysts and electrode structures with improved durability. A key area of research will be the automation of analytical electron tomography towards understanding the impact of catalyst-support interactions on degradation. 
 
Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Conduct degradation studies using STEM, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy
  • Implement automated methods for high-throughput analytical electron tomography
  • Report and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Present results at international scientific conferences and in HFTO consortia meetings
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Physics, Materials Science & Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Background in transmission electron microscopy
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with electron tomography data acquisition and reconstruction
  • Familiarity with coding for data analysis in languages such as Python, Matlab, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
