Marine Field Program Lead

Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) program  within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Marine Field Program Lead (Natural Resource Scientist 2) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading and conducting marine water quality fieldwork year-round for our long-term Washington marine waters monitoring program. Responsibilities include oceanographic sampling gear management and use, instrument calibration (CTD and other electronic sensors), water sample collection and measurements in the field from various sampling platforms, laboratory sample analyses, some data analysis, and report writing. You will lead the annual field planning process with senior staff to select stations and parameters in support of strategic monitoring goals, creates field schedules, trains staff in marine field surveys, and manages a marine laboratory. The data collected are used to determine the status and trends of marine water quality in support of science goals and modeling efforts in Washington State and depends on consistently excellent data quality and reliable sampling attainment.

Duties

What makes this role unique?
Our team of scientists are passionate about their work to measure, analyze, assess, interpret and communicate conditions of Washington’s marine environments over time. In this role, you will lead scientific fieldwork using standard oceanographic techniques in support of monitoring to determine continuous status and trends for marine water quality in Puget Sound and the coastal estuaries.

What you will do: 

  • Independently conduct sampling and laboratory analysis of marine water data in accordance with goals of the Marine Monitoring Unit Marine Waters Monitoring Program. Plans for regularly scheduled sampling cruises; prepares and assembles required equipment. 
  • Operate oceanographic instruments (e.g., CTDs, sensors) in the field according to published Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Assurance Monitoring Plans.
  • Collect seawater samples for water quality analyses, such as dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, particulates, and other high priority parameters, using equipment like auto samplers and Niskin bottles. 
  • Manage samples including the tracking and delivery to contract laboratories; assures that all samples are managed according to protocols and processed within holding times. 
  • Maintain and calibrate field equipment; track and manage all inventories. Maintain the marine laboratory in a clean and organized manner; calibrate and assure that all laboratory instruments are in good working order. 
  • Manage data entry, perform routine data processing and analysis, summarize results, and assist in report preparation.
  • Independently perform data quality assessment and analysis of standard marine water quality variables using routine oceanographic techniques. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1:
A Bachelor’s of science degree with major study in marine ecology, marine science, oceanography, or other closely allied marine science field and 3 years of professional work experience in marine ecology, marine science, or oceanography.

Option 2:
A Master’s degree with a major study in marine ecology, marine science, oceanography, or other closely allied marine science field and 1 years of professional work experience in marine ecology, marine science, or oceanography.

Option 3:
A Ph.D. with a major study in marine ecology, marine science, oceanography, or other closely allied marine science field.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 

Must have a valid Driver's License.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience operating, configuring, troubleshooting, and calibrating a CTD with multiple sensors.
  • Experience managing a lab and/or managing scientific equipment. 
  • Experience conducting field sampling from a boat under a variety of conditions.
  • Experience with SeaBird software.
  • Experience with spreadsheets, working with large data sets, and database software.
