Storage Platform and Systems Backup Administrator

The Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Storage Platform and Systems Backup Administrator (IT System Administration - Journey) position to join our team in the Enterprise Infrastructure Operations unit. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.

Serving as one of 11 technology professionals in the Enterprise Infrastructure Operations unit within Ecology IT, you will be the primary administrator of the enterprise storage platforms and backup solutions. You will help mature Ecology’s enterprise infrastructure and policies following our recent modernization and migration to the state data center. Your expertise and participation will help Ecology improve its cybersecurity posture, and business continuity/disaster recovery stance.

The Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) is the central provider of strategic and tactical support for the use of Information Technology (IT) within Ecology. The mission of ITSO is to create and support useful technology services that adapt for the future and support Ecology’s mission.
 
The Infrastructure and Operations (INO) section is focused on the planning, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of Ecology’s agency-wide technology platforms that all applications and services operate on. This section provides services to all staff in the areas of desktop technical support, Help Desk, wired and wireless networking, Regional Information Technology Services (RITS) for field site technology support, servers, storage, managed print services, and unified communications support and services. In this position you will control and manage the agency’s Backup and Recovery, and storage platforms.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. Presently, the majority of the work for this position can be done off site. Occasionally, installation or maintenance work may be needed on site at the state data center or headquarters. Typically this occurs less than once a week. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding building occupancy, mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.

Duties

What makes this role unique? 
This is a critical role that calls for a resourceful and competent individual to resolve recovery requests and urgent backup/recovery and storage system issues, propose improvements and upgrades, and seek training and stay up to date on current trends and developments. In this role, you are expected to work with various technical staff, vendors, and stakeholders effectively.

What you will do: 

  • Provide primary support for all agency enterprise storage systems and services. 
  • Provide primary support for agency enterprise data backup and recovery services.
  • Manage inventory of IT storage and backup/recovery system devices and software.
  • Perform system analysis and design using standardized processes for requirements capture, analysis, and system design. 
  • On a daily basis, monitor Storage and Backup/Recovery systems for performance anomalies.
  • On a monthly basis, perform routine maintenance duties to ensure optimization, and security of all storage and backup/recovery infrastructure.
  • Maintain all storage and backup/recovery system related documentation as system changes occur.
  • Provide technical storage and backup/recovery service consultation to staff.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment and educational experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1:
Five (5) years of recent professional experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: System Backup and Recovery, Server Administration, Server Virtualization, Enterprise Storage Platforms, Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS), or converged compute environments.

Option 2:
Three (3) years of recent professional experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: System Backup and Recovery, Server Administration, Server Virtualization, Enterprise Storage Platforms, Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS), or converged compute environments And
An Associate’s degree in Computer Science, IT or closely related field.
 
Option 3: 
One (1) year of recent professional experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: System Backup and Recovery, Server Administration, Server Virtualization, Enterprise Storage Platforms, Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS), or converged compute environments And
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology (IT) or closely related field.
 
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 
  • Incumbent must hold a valid driver’s license when operating a State or privately owned vehicle on official State business, and must comply with Washington State’s liability laws when operating a privately owned vehicle on official State business. 
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally work in excess of 40 hours a week and travel statewide.

  • Experience maintaining and operating IT Infrastructure for organizations with 1000 or more staff. 
  • Operating and maintaining Dell Isilon storage platforms, and Dell Compellant storage platforms. 
  • Managing and operating Rubrik backup and recovery systems and services. Managing and operating VMware vSphere and Center.
