Informatics Laboratory Fellowship

Make a Difference—Join the Front Lines of Public Health!

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL)—US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Informatics Fellowship is an exciting, experiential learning opportunity for post-bachelors, -masters and -doctoral scientists to apply their informatics skills—and learn new ones—in a public health laboratory. The program prepares fellows through an intensive “boots on the ground” training experience. With a strong emphasis on electronic data exchange, the successful fellows will work with subject matter experts to develop and expand the critical information technology infrastructure of the public health laboratory. Fellows will become familiar with the essential nature of secure bidirectional data exchange between the client and the laboratory, in disciplines including infectious disease diagnostics, newborn screening and environmental testing. The fellows will learn how to select or build a Laboratory Information Management System, and understand messaging standards, vocabulary and terminology. Other potential areas will include developing expertise in cloud computing, systems interoperability and data analytics.
