Stream Restoration Designer / Engineer I

Do you want to be part of a team whose talent and dedication are unmatched in the industry? RES is currently accepting applications for a stream restoration practitioner in its Louisville or Frankfort, Kentucky offices to join a growing, multi-disciplinary team of ecosystem restoration designers and engineers currently working on some of the nation’s largest rivers, streams, and wetland restoration projects.

Responsibilities

The desired candidate’s responsibilities would include, but are not limited to:
Fieldwork
  • Geomorphic, biological, and ecological site assessments.
  • Mitigation crediting field protocols
  • Applied fluvial geomorphic/hydraulic survey
  • Construction oversight
  • Post-construction monitoring
Data Processing and Technical Writing
  • Document restoration design process
  • Provide written portions of proposals, regulatory permit applications, and post-construction monitoring reports related to restoration design
  • Complete mitigation crediting calculations
 
Restoration Design
  • Restoration design development including design discharge selection and development of design metrics
  • Develop design metrics and parameters into a 3-dimensional design with the Autodesk Civil 3D environment
  • Assist in AutoCAD plan production to develop preliminary, final, and construction restoration plan sets
  • Assist in the development of cost estimates and construction specifications

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D, stream restoration principles and practices, fluvial geomorphology, field survey and data collection techniques, and environmental regulations.
 
Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree and 1 to 3+ years’ experience in a natural resources design field (such as, but not limited to: landscape architecture, civil engineering, environmental engineering, biological systems engineering, agricultural engineering, or water resources engineering) or a natural sciences field (such as but not limited to: geology, geomorphology, environmental science, ecology, or biology).
  • Superior writing, communication, and computer skills (MS Word, Excel, etc.) with attention to detail. Must produce a writing example upon request.
  • Ability to effectively focus on a variety of tasks to produce quality results within project deadlines
  • Ability to travel to sites as needed. Overnight stays are required.
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
 
Preferred qualifications:
  • On the job experience with stream restoration, field data collection, water resources engineering, and hydraulic and hydrology investigations
  • Current industry-related registration or the ability to obtain registration upon employment
  • Knowledge of stream ecology, biology, and geomorphology
  • Knowledge of watershed hydrology, stream hydraulics, and sediment transport
  • Understanding of the use of regional regressions, regional curves, and reference data in stream restoration design
  • Ability to evaluate design discharge, channel cross-section, profile, and planform using a variety of methods
  • Ability to read and interpret ecological restoration construction plans
  • Ability to interpret results from H&H models
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, HEC-RAS or other hydrologic and hydraulic software
  • Experience in construction document production
  • Familiarity with Clean Water Act, state, and federal environmental regulations and permitting processes
