Job title is: CREW Intern. This Internship can be for College Credits.

Broad description of site/agency/company/institution:

CREW is a network of local leaders building grassroots climate resilience through inclusive & hands-on education, service, and planning.

Together, we are working to equip families & communities with the resources and capacity to prepare for and respond to local climate changes equitably, sustainably, & collaboratively.

Internship overview and specific role of community health intern:

Communities Responding to Extreme Weather (CREW) and Tufts University faculty members will quantify and evaluate social connectedness in neighborhoods in Boston that is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and extreme weather.

Extreme weather has an impact on people’s health and CREW will be working with Tufts University Faculty members Dr. James Intriligator - Professor of the Practice, Mechanical Engineering and Dr. Justin Hollander - Professor, Urban and Environmental Policy and Tufts students to develop surveys given out to community members in Boston.

Included in the information presented to community members in Boston, will be the relationship between extreme weather and health.

CREW would like the intern or interns to primary help with this project and work with the CREW research coordinator, other Tufts students, community members, etc.

The intern can be remote and does not need to live in Masscheutts.

We would like the intern to research health problems in communities of Boston (Chinatown and Grovehall) caused by air pollution, fossil fuels, extreme heat, extreme cold, etc. (i.e., Asthma rate in Roxbury, etc.)

The intern/interns will also have an opportunity to post on CREW social media accounts about the project and in general climate resilience articles for CREW following.

A Second Project starting in May

CREW recently received a grant from Mass General Hospital to distribute AC units and we will be giving out AC units in May, June, and July at community events, along with having food and a physician doing presentations about heat waves. That will be one event per month (May, June, and July) in three communities in Boston (South End, Dorchester, and Mattapan) All three communities suffer from urban heat island effect, and we will host the events at a church in the South End, a community center in Dorchester, and the Boston Nature Center in Mattapan.

The intern/interns will be able attend virtual planning and organizing meetings leading up to the events in the late spring and summer and I imagine that the intern will play a small role in our organizing efforts.

Intern responsibilities or projects might include:
Important necessary skills:
Good written and verbal skills
Positive Attitude and Eagerness to Learn
Critical Thinking
Time Management
Research and Analysis (have a basic understanding of how to compile and synthesize research).
Additional learning opportunities related to community health: Intern will have an opportunity to be part of the planning process for virtual webinar that include medical professionals (i.e., infectious disease doctor, etc.) presenting on the relationship of health and climate.
Intern also will have an opportunity to attend virtual MGH Center for the Environment and Health lectures.

Times/days of the week must be available (total of 11-14 hours): We are flexible at CREW but ideally, we would like the hours to be between 10am-5pm Monday through Friday.
