Research Technician I

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is currently accepting applications for a Research Technician position in the laboratory of Dr. Partha Mitra.  In order to understand how brains work, we need to understand their circuit connectivity. After a century of research this knowledge remains incomplete, so multiple research groups are now targeting this knowledge gap to fundamentally advance our understanding of brain function. The Brain Architecture Project is a collaborative effort aimed at creating an integrated resource containing knowledge about nervous system architecture in multiple species. Currently the project is focused on analyzing a large data set of mouse brains (>1500 brains, each with >100Gigavoxels of image data) to obtain a comprehensive circuit map of the whole brain. The candidate will participate in an exciting fundamental neuroscience science project, while applying technical laboratory skills, and will be involved in histological and animal handling procedures. Duties will include assisting in digital neuropathology and tissue processing. The successful candidate will participate in a variety of basic and applied research in a high-throughput histology pipeline dedicated to optimizing how brain tissue samples can be viewed.

Essential Responsibilities:
 Work with neuroanatomical tracer-injected brain tissue, as part of a larger study. Work with animals, histological and immunohistological staining, and microscope imaging equipment. Perform histological staining and participate in the development of novel protocols. Assist other technicians and the laboratory manager in complex data gathering and analysis in the high-throughput tissue pipeline.
Position RequirementsEducation: BS/BA in Biology or related discipline is required (minimum).
Skills/Experience: Candidates will possess experience with basic laboratory practices and include some of the following skills: Small animal handling, perfusion and/or dissection of tissue, cryostat sectioning, histological or immunochemical tissue staining, brightfield and fluorescent microscopy, basic mechanical/electrical engineering or willingness and ability to apply engineering concepts to a laboratory setting.
