Life Sciences Research Associate - Kidney Disease and Dialysis Research

Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) supports the nation's second largest research program conducted among the VA Hospitals and offers an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to join a Stanford kidney physician, Tammy Sirich, M.D., in the conduct of impactful studies pertaining to kidney disease and dialysis.

The Research Associate will be directly contributing to innovative patient-oriented translational research, while working directly with Dr. Tammy Sirich, an Assistant Professor at Stanford University, who also serves as the Dialysis Director at the VA hospital in Palo Alto.

We are looking for the Research Associate with lab experience performing analytical assays of biological samples, who will perform skilled procedures and protocols to completion, while also initiating modifications of assay protocols and development of new protocols. The Research Associate will use liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and UV photospectrometry to analyze human biological samples.

Schedule: The Research Associate should be able to work flexible hours to accommodate dialysis schedules (i.e., potential to work some weekend days and some early mornings to visit patients and collect samples when the study coordinators and/or investigator are unavailable). Work from home is available for days not required in the lab.

COVID-19 Vaccination Record: the dialysis units require visitors to be vaccinated. You will be required to present proof of vaccination to enter the facility. VAPAHCS, where this position is based on, requires proof of COVID vaccination or confirmation of medical or religious exemption.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE'S MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the lab:Ensure that other lab members (including fellows and students) have training and follow procedures
  • Manage funds, including allocation of expenses to different grants and balancing accounts
  • Ensure the lab always has the necessary supplies, placing replenishment orders as necessary
  • Maintain and supervise use of analytical instrumentation.
  • Perform assays of biological and chemical samples using analytical methods including liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and UV photospectrometry:Initiate and collaborate on the design and conduct experiments to achieve defined goals
  • Introduce and troubleshoot diverse techniques for the lab, when needed by investigator.
  • Contribute to patient enrollment of studies.
  • Prepare reports and contribute to writing scientific papers from the data acquired.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience;
  • Valid Driver's license;

  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate dialysis schedules (i.e., potential to work some weekend days and some early mornings to visit patients and collect samples when the study coordinators and/or investigator are unavailable)
  • Required: 1 year of experience working with analytical assays and lab-related experience, including:Experience with analytical methods/assays analyzing human biological samples and chemical samples;
  • Training in general lab skills such as micro-pipetting and use of general lab equipment such as centrifuge, UV photospectrometer, vacuum pump;
  • Training in analytical skills, including calculations of dilution factors and solution concentrations.
  • Preferred: 18 months of related experience. Previous experience with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Experience in research sample collection and processing. Previous experience with subject recruitment in a research environment. Experience with subjects on dialysis would be very valuable.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Solid record-keeping skills to maintain a research notebook with day-to-day experiment procedures and results;
  • Ability to troubleshoot an experiment as necessary;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
