Assateague Island National Seashore - Surf Lifeguard - Seasonal

Assateague Island National Seashore is recruiting for Surf Lifeguard staff for the 2022 season. The job of the surf lifeguard is all about public safety on the ocean front. It entails preventative lifeguarding, lifesaving and search and rescue. You will receive over 100 hours of paid training that will prepare you for this assignment. Our operation boasts modern rescue gear that you will be fully equipped with. You will be trained in EMS at the Emergency Medical Responder level. You will learn how to prevent drowning, prevent injuries, provide safety education and execute effective rescues. You will be provided All-Terrain Vehicle Safety training that will prepare you to safely respond to incidents outside of the lifeguard area. You will get to perform daily in-service training that consists of ocean swimming, soft sand running, kayaking, paddle boarding, fin swimming, rescue drills, EMS drills and much more. Housing is available at a reasonable rate. 

Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS) is a 37 mile long barrier Island along the coast of Maryland and Virginia, located approximately 130 miles east of Washington D.C. ASIS is managed by the National Park Service with a mission to protect and preserve our national natural and cultural resources while providing for the enjoyment of these resources by visitors... Assateague serves as a public land where visitors can come to relax, recreate and immerse themselves in the resource. Popular activities include walking the beach, swimming, surfing, wildlife viewing, birding, crabbing, fishing and kayaking. Over 2 million visitors come to Assateague each year, including the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge located in the Virginia district of Assateague Island. ASIS has two lifeguarded beach areas; one located in the Maryland section and the other located in the Virginia portion. The Assateague Maryland State Park also has a lifeguard service.

All of the lifeguard positions are seasonal appointments not to exceed 1039 hours. Some part time positions are available for the GS-03 and GS-04 positions. Our established time goals for lifeguard operations are from Memorial Day until the end of September. If we have enough staff, we may guard the first two weeks of October. Surf School typically begins in mid-May and that’s the time period most lifeguards will enter on duty. Head Lifeguards and Lead Lifeguards will typically enter on duty the first week of May. The staff typically is a diverse group consisting of post college students as well as current college students. The daily schedule is from 9am to 5pm. You will receive two consecutive days off per week and you will earn annual leave, sick leave, overtime pay and Sunday premium pay according to your schedule. Health insurance is also an option for full time seasonal positions.

Because this is a federal position, US citizenship is required. You must be 18 years of age. You will also be required to pass a drug test, physical examination and background security check. You must be able to pass a swim test of 500 yard pool swim in less than 10 minutes and run 1.25 miles in less than 12 minutes. For the head lifeguard and lead lifeguard positions, you must hold a valid EMR certificate or higher level EMS certification.
