Vehicle Mechanical Engineer, Menlo Park, CA

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer at the Associate or Senior Associate level with a fundamental interest in the automotive field for our Vehicle Engineering Practice in Menlo Park, CA. In this role you will work as part of a team responsible for the analysis of transportation accidents, mechanical failures, and the design of consumer and industrial products. I t is expected that some projects will include field inspections of vehicles and crash sites, the setup and execution of various test programs, including full-scale handling tests and component or control systems evaluations. You will be technically talented with good hands-on skills, have excellent communication skills, and be motivated to ultimately develop your own consulting practice and grow professionally within Exponent. We also expect you to ultimately develop a specialized expertise in the automotive field such as the design and performance of existing or emerging automotive technology, or analysis and reconstruction of transportation accidents.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Engineering analysis
  • Field and laboratory testing
  • Original research
  • Site, vehicle, and equipment inspections
  • Managing projects from initiation to completion and ensure that Exponent meets its deadlines and produces exceptional work product
  • Preparing written reports and presenting results/findings to diverse audiences
  • Overtime, after-hours work, and extensive travel is often required

You will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field (or a M.S. and 4 years of experience)
  • Knowledge of automotive systems
  • Must have knowledge of dynamics and mechanical design
  • Field and/or lab measurement experience required
  • Must have analytical and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of photography, CAD, automotive terminology, and autonomous/automated vehicles or technology is a significant plus
  • P.E. license or the willingness to obtain a P.E. license
  • Must be versatile and team-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to gather information from and convey technical conclusions to individuals in engineering, business, and industry
  • Dedication to quality and accuracy and the ability to support multiple group projects
  • Must have effective leadership skills with the ability to interact with managers, engineers, attorneys, media and non-technical staff
