We are currently seeking a Battery Specialist for our Polymer Science and Materials Chemistry Practice in Natick, MA. In this role, you will work as part of a team to solve challenging, real-world battery electrochemistry and materials problems for our clients. This individual will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers and will play a key role in designing and running experiments, as well as interpreting and presenting data both within Exponent, and to external clients. This position requires some travel (limited during COVID-19) and will involve collaboration with scientists and engineers from other Exponent offices and practices, covering a wide range of industries. A long-term goal for a successful candidate will be to develop business by obtaining new projects and bringing new clients to the firm, while continuing to grow professionally as an expert in your field.

You will be responsible for: 

  • Conducting hands-on battery failure analysis and quality assessment
  • Designing and executing laboratory tests to support projects, as well as interpreting and presenting data
  • Attending and contributing to field inspections
  • Performing materials characterization, using techniques such as photography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray computed tomography scanning, and electrochemical analysis techniques
  • Communicating and working effectively with other Exponent staff at all levels of the company
  • Analyzing data and reporting results at an appropriate technical level for the intended audience

You will have the following skills and qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering or similar field
  • Specialized knowledge of electrochemistry and lithium-ion or other battery technology is required
  • Strong laboratory hands-on experience working on battery (or coin cell) assembly, cathode/anode/electrolyte development, or battery cycling test
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work within project teams with strong desire to contribute, have potential for technical and project managerial leadership
  • Must be able to convey complex technical information to individuals in engineering, business, legal and related industries
  • Work/research experience with advanced battery chemistries is a plus, such as lithium metal / solid-state, flow, etc.
