Polymer Mechanics Engineer

We are currently seeking a Polymer Mechanics Engineer for an Associate level position for our Polymer Science Materials Chemistry Practice in our Menlo Park, CA office. In this role you will work as part of a team to collaborate with scientists and engineers from other Exponent offices and practice areas. A long-term goal for a successful candidate will be to develop business by obtaining new projects and bringing new clients to the firm.
 
You will be responsible for: 

  • Inspecting, scientific analysis, and testing to address polymer-related issues related to the use of materials in applications from consumer products to construction materials and medical devices
  • Analyzing root cause of a wide variety of failures related to issues arising in development, manufacturing, and/or use of products manufactured for industries including consumer products, construction materials, and medical devices
  • Gathering information and conveying technical conclusions to individuals in science, engineering, business, law, and industry

You will have the following skills and qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • An advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of polymer materials and characterization techniques
  • Polymer structure-property understanding, including polymer mechanics, melt- and solution-based rheology, viscoelasticity, and detailed knowledge of the characterization techniques needed to elucidate such properties
  • Experience in polymer materials analysis techniques including mechanical properties (tensile, compression, flexure), creep and fatigue, melt- and solution-based rheology, thermal analysis, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Superior problem-solving abilities
  • Advanced educational and publication credentials 
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills 
  • Practical testing and applications understanding in a manufacturing or R&D environment is a plus 
  • Polymer formulation, compounding, dispensing, and/or molding experience is a plus
