A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the Baker Lab at Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute in Albuquerque, NM. Studies how influenza viruses’ interface with their vertebrate hosts, with the goal of better mitigation or prediction strategies against future pandemic viruses. Specifically, we study how host alternative RNA splicing reshapes the virus: host landscape during infection. Our work combines transcriptomics, molecular biology, and virology to identify and characterize the evolutionary struggle between viruses and their hosts.

We are seeking a curious, creative, and highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to spearhead research aimed at understanding the contribution of alternative RNA splicing to virus infection, adaptation, and host co-evolution. The postdoc should bring their own ideas, but can initially drive research from the lab integrating long read RNA sequencing data with experimental approaches that identify biological mechanisms of virus control. This is a fully funded position, but depending on the candidate’s career trajectory, significant attention will be paid towards achieving the next step.

An individual with a proven publication record, exemplary organizational skills, and excelling in independent and team-based work is ideal. They will primarily be responsible for conducting and managing multiple independent host-related infectious disease research projects in a BSL-2 laboratory. Tasks include molecular cloning, virus infection, functional genomics, next generation sequencing library preparation, and developing genome-wide screening methodologies. A well-qualified person will have the additional opportunity to work in bioinformatic approaches to identify and characterize genetic and transcriptomic host responses to RNA virus infection.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be primarily responsible for guiding and reporting on their independent projects, and providing input and guidance to lab members. Responsibilities also include maintaining accurate and complete study records, and analyzing data and communicating research and news to the team and the field, all while maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment. Will also write scientific papers, present at nearby and distant conferences, and write grant applications.

The position requires a Ph.D. in virology or similar discipline. Candidates must have experience in virology-related research methodology, principles and procedures. Must have the ability to successfully perform a variety of laboratory procedures using standard laboratory equipment and instruments. Must have the ability to gather, analyze and report data. Preference will be given to individuals who have experience with project management.

Must have experience in or be willing to learn bioinformatics. 

Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
