Harris Miller Miller & Hanson Inc. (HMMH) is an international leader in environmental noise and vibration control in the transportation sector. We provide consulting services to government and private sector clients related to aviation, highway, rail, transit, industrial, construction, military, recreational, and entertainment projects. HMMH offers a unique career opportunity for a client-focused professional with less than five years of work experience who desires to use their aviation knowledge, analytic abilities, data management, and communication skills within an established and respected consulting firm with an emphasis on technical excellence. Candidates with backgrounds in aviation, environmental sciences, planning, engineering, physics, math, or other technical fields are encouraged to apply.

We seek candidates with solid technical, quantitative, and technical writing backgrounds to join our firm. As a consultant at HMMH you will have an opportunity to work independently but also learn from senior staff as you:
  • Use your quantitative skills to analyze data to determine noise, air quality, and other environmental impacts arising from changes in the National Airspace System (NAS)
  • Participate in airspace and flight procedure design working groups as well as field measurement trips for civil and military projects throughout the United States
  • Report results for general public comprehension and participate in public workshops or community meetings
  • Actively communicate with project team members as well as clients to contribute towards delivering high-quality technical solutions and documentation

Specific duties will vary and focus on supporting analysis of effects arising from such changes as modifications to published Instrument Flight Procedures (IFPs), air traffic facility sectors/Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)/Letters of Agreement (LOAs), and removal of airspace from the public domain (e.g., the establishment of Special Use Airspace (SUA)). Other analyses performed may include impacts to the noise setting around an airport, changes in noise underlying military training airspace, vibration, and air quality. Common activities may include analyzing aircraft flight track databases to support environmental effect modeling; conducting in-field measurements of aircraft-based noise and vibration; developing alternative flight procedures to minimize aircraft noise; and developing models for analysis on noise, vibration, and air quality impacts. You will help develop documentation and presentations of model inputs, evaluate results, and conduct statistical analysis on transportation operations as well as land use. Occasional support to our other modal clients (e.g., highway, rail, industrial, and recreational uses) may be required.

Requirements include:
  • BS, BA, or MS in a technical field (physics, math, engineering, aerospace/aviation, environmental sciences, urban planning, or other technical fields)
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and communication skills
  • Interest in work-travel: field measurement trips and learn to present results to clients and public

Additional desired qualifications, though not required:
  • FAA Airman (Private Pilot or higher), Air Traffic Controller, or Dispatcher certification
  • Experience in data management, GIS mapping, and/or programming
  • Experience in air quality, vibration, airspace, and/or noise analysis
  • Interest in work-travel: airspace and flight procedure working groups as well as field measurement trips and public meetings/workshops
  • Experience in a consulting environment
  • Interest in transportation, aviation, environmental issues, acoustics, and/or emissions a plus
