Southern Operations Coordinator

The Great Basin Institute is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and service throughout the west. The Institute’s mission is to advance applied science and ecological literacy through community engagement and agency partnerships, supporting national parks, forest, open spaces and public lands. GBI provides a wide variety of environmental services to train and develop the next generation of conservationists and resource managers.

The Great Basin Institute seeks a Southern Operations Coordinator (SDC) to support programs operating out of our Southern Operations Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SDC is a key leadership position that supports GBI programs across southern Nevada and the southwest. This position will collaborate with agency partners to develop conservation projects, assess project needs and establish performance targets. The SDC oversees the logistical and administrative functions of the GBI’s field operations, providing direct oversight of field staff and AmeriCorps members. Field crews implement a wide variety of work for and in support of Federal Land Management Agencies, State Agencies, and others. Projects include trail work, ecological monitoring, natural resources inventories, rare plant surveys, archaeological surveys, and forest health assessments. Many of our crews work in remote field locations on multi-day backcountry field tours. Safety is a top priority for GBI, as such, the SDC strives to improve crew safety while maintaining Quality Assurance for all programmatic elements. Additionally, the SDC offers leadership direction for professional development activities. The responsibilities of this position require strong skills in organization, communication, and problem solving. 

Reports To: GBI Associate Director

Essential Functions and Duties:
• Implements and maintains GBI’s strategic plan.
• Promotes the mission and objectives of GBI to field teams and partners.
• Communicates effectively and compellingly in oral and written formats.
• Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with agencies and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the GBI.
• Cultivate new project partners to diversify our project base by responding to project partner Request for Proposals.
• Explore and secure project funding opportunities through researching and applying for grant funding.
• Assist in administering all project grants including grant reporting requirements.
• Maintain a high level of project organization including a consistently updated programmatic scope of work.
• Communicate regularly with project partners via phone and written correspondence, to assure their satisfaction with crew performance and that • AmeriCorps members receive a positive experience.
• Supervise seasonal staff, AmeriCorps Members, and volunteers.
• Staff training and orientation.
• Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization's people (clients, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image, and implement measures to control risks.
• Work hands on and with a safety first attitude in sometimes challenging environments and difficult terrains.
• Perform equipment/supply checks and inventories, obtain new or replacement equipment and supplies, and track location and condition of equipment and supplies.
• Manage paperwork for safety monitoring, progress reporting, vehicle mileage, and other logs and reports from the field.
• Support daily safety check-ins and other safety communication to provide timely and effective support of field crews.
• Coordinate with other GBI staff during the field season to address crew needs/issues as they may arise in the field.
• Support the development, coordination, and implementation of the Nevada Conservation Corps’ Leadership Development Program.
• Assist GBI Associate Director in maintenance of the Las Vegas field station.
• Assist program staff with vehicle assignment, availability, and tracking.
• Assist other GBI programs with special projects.
